My Record Collection by The Pineapple Thief's Bruce Soord

In My Record Collection, we dig down to the bottom of musicians' souls to find out what the most treasured parts of their record collection are. This week, it's the turn of Bruce Soord, leading man in prog collective The Pineapple Thief, let's dive in...

The first record I ever bought with my own money was…

"This was Status Quo - Live. The one with the ripped paper effect on the front. I must have been 8 years old at the time and thought it was the edgiest, rock record in the world. When my folks left the house, I used to blast it out and headbang at the window to amuse my neighbours."

The record that made me want to be in a band was…

"I'd pick Tales of Mystery and Imagination by The Alan Parsons Project. It was the first time I listened to anything other than early 80s pop and it blew me away."

The record I've played more than any other is…

"Has to be Sea Change by Beck. It's so unashamedly melancholic. It also sounds absolutely incredible."

The record that always make me feel good is…

"Anything by prog/r&b obscurities Ambrosia. I think I got into this band because they guested on some Alan Parsons stuff. If 'How Much I Feel' goes on the karaoke I'm there. Air grabs, the lot."

The record I turn to when I'm feeling down is…

"Anything by Biffy Clyro, but probably Only Revolutions. The best pop rock merchants on the planet."

The record I think is the most underrated of all time is…

"For this, I've chosen Mobile Home by Longpigs. Beautiful songs. No idea why they caved in after that but it's music's loss."

The record with my favourite cover art is…

"I can't get death metal out of my head at the moment, so right now, Spiritual Healing by Death..."

The record with my favourite title is…

"Reek of Putrefaction by Carcass. As a kid I was exposed to a lot of Death Metal around the late 80s and thought 'who the hell are these guys and what are they singing about???’"

The record I can't understand why everybody loves is…

"John Grant. I wasn't a massive fan of the last album but always interested to see where he goes. A solo piano and vocal show I saw about 5 years ago in Bristol ranks as one of the best I've seen…"

The last record I bought was…

"It was World's Strongest Man by Gaz Coombes, always interested to see what he's up to."

The record I'm most looking forward to hearing in 2018 is…

"I'm still waiting for one to be announced! I've just finished writing and I'm an audio narcissist when I'm in that zone…"

The greatest record of all time is…

"The Beatles' Abbey Road. Predictable I know..."
