My Record Collection by Tom Grennan

In My Record Collection, we dig down to the bottom of musicians' souls to find out what the most treasured parts of their record collection are. This week, it's the turn of rising star Tom Grennan, let's see what he offers up...

The first record I ever bought with my own money was…

"Eminem's Curtain Call. I was buzzing when I got it! I used to walk around with my handheld CD player thinking I was a rap god!"

The record that made me want to be in a band was…

"Probably The Kooks' first album. It was the first gig I saw and I saw the reaction of the crowd from one song, 'Seaside'. I just thought I'd love to write a song that people connected to like that."

The record I've played more than any other is…

"Amy Winehouse's Back to Black. The way she writes her songs when she enters a dark place to create a bright one is one of a kind. Amy's a hero."

The record that always makes me feel good is…

"Ray Charles' Yes Indeed! It brings me back to the time when my aunt had a jukebox in her backroom. I remember dancing to it non-stop as a kid and it's a record I always put on to dance around my kitchen, especially when I'm cooking."

The record I turn to when I'm feeling down is…

"Kanye West - The College Dropout. It's the most uplifting album. 'Jesus Walks' and 'All l Falls Down' are bangers and always make me feel a little bit better when I'm listening to them."

The record I think is the most underrated of all time is…

"I'd go for Arctic Monkeys - Humbug. This record split a lot of fans opinions but for me, Alex Turner's writing on it is out of this world. He's a writer I really admire."

The record with my favourite cover art is…

"Definitely Pink Floyd - The Dark Side of the Moon. It’s so simple but says so much!"

The record with my favourite title is…

"Arctic Monkey's AM. You're not forgetting that."

The record I can't understand why everybody loves is…

"It has to be 'Don't You Want Me Baby' by The Human League. I've got absolutely nothing against The Human League but that song just takes me back to really, really rubbish school discos that were just crap and for some reason, they would ALWAYS play this track."

The last record I bought was…

"The Doors' LA Woman. My guitarist Danny Connors recommended it to me. It's wicked and I'm still listening to it loads. I just want to get my head around every bit of it."

The record I'm most looking forward to hearing in 2018 is…

"Arctic Monkeys, I think everyone is. They've heavily influenced my teenage years and they're a seminal band. There's no another band like them. And I'm looking forward to people finally hearing my debut album, Lighting Matches."

The greatest record of all time is…

"There’s so many but Notorious BIG's Ready to Die is definitely up there for me! It's the first hip-hop record I listened to and I thought, this is legendary. His melodies, phrasing and scanning across the beat, in my opinion, are unrivalled."

Tom Grennan's debut album Lighting Matches is released in July and is available to pre-order here.
