My Record Collection by Tom Zanetti

In My Record Collection, we dig down to the bottom of musicians' souls to find out what the most treasured parts of their record collection are. This week, it's the turn of superstar DJ Tom Zanetti, let's see what he picks out for us...

The first record I ever bought with my own money was…

"This was Daniel Beddingfield's 'Gotta Get Thru This'. Loved it when I first heard it, it was the first kind of garage track that went commercial and it sounded so unique, with such a catchy vocal. I think I first heard it when I was taping the chart show when I was young."

The record that made me want to be in a band was…

"This is RUN-DMC vs Jason Nevis's 'It’s Like That'. I loved the video for this, with all of the breakdancing. I used to be able to breakdance when I was younger, and I just really enjoyed the sound of that upfront dance music."

The record I've played more than any other is…

"My own tune 'You Want Me'. Because it’s been my biggest crossover tune so far, and I’ve played it in every set I’ve played – and I’ve played 200 across the 12 months."

The record that always makes me feel good is…

"Dean Martin's Volare. This song reminds me of being with family and having a good time with people I love. And it’s a belter of a song!"

The record I turn to when I'm feeling down is…

"Hozier and his Live Lounge cover of Arctic Monkeys' ‘Do I Wanna Know’. This song blows me away – it’s such a strong, emotional song and it’s a really poignant track for me."

The record I think is the most underrated of all time is…

"Cell Broco's 'Don’t Change'. Love this tune, we signed it and released, it to our label Sleepin is Cheatin and it such a big song. The music video is a movie."

The record with my favourite cover art is…

"Biggie Smalls - Ready To Die! This brings back loads of memories for me, remember when I was around 15 years old and listening to this album - it had him on the front as a baby."

The record with my favourite title is…

"I'd have to go for Eminem's Slim Shady. I love that he has two aliases in the title, it’s clever and well-thought out."

The record I can't understand why everybody loves is...

"That’s a hard one! I don't always get the gimmicky tracks that become so popular. They're always those one-off ones' that get really big!"

The last record I bought was…

"Tyga and Offset's Taste. My son introduced me to this, he played it to me while we were in the car, he’s always showing me bangers! I love this US sound, so immediately was into this."

The record I'm most looking forward to hearing in 2018 is…

"Tom Zanetti's 'Make it Look Good'. For obvious reasons….and it’s going to be huge of course!"

The greatest record of all time is…

"Michael Jackson's Thriller.  Just because every time I have played this since I was a kid it’s always made me tap my foot. I was a massive fan of MJ when I was a kid and this song is up there as one of the greatest."
