My Record Collection by Willie Jones

In My Record Collection, we dig down to the bottom of musicians' souls to find out what the most treasured parts of their record collection are. This week, it's the turn of rising country star Willie Jones, let's see what he goes for...

The first record I ever bought with my own money was…

"The Confessions album by Usher. I was in the fifth grade and I used to keep in my portable CD player. That and Crunk Juice by Lil John and the Eastside Boys..."

The record that made me want to be in a band was…

"B5, they were a group of brothers and I just thought they were so cool."

The record I've played more than any other is…

"Graduation by Kanye West. I just love Kanye and this album. It came out when I was in middle school and I think I had just gotten an MP3 player and it’s all I wanted to listen too. Beats was crazy. He still remains one of my biggest influences."

The record that always makes me feel good is…

"I’ve always been a big fan of Pharrell and his song 'Girl' has production that just he can deliver.  Definitely want to work with him one day! Hit me up!"

The record I turn to when I'm feeling down is…

"Hero by Kirk Franklin the message in all of Kirk’s music is of faith. Sometimes you just have to be reminded of that faith. He has brought me out of a lot of low times and I hope can inspire my fans like he does me."

The record I think is the most underrated of all time is…

"That’s a tough one so I’m gonna come from a different lane. Since I write and am starting to produce to build my sound, that process is what I believe is underrated. Inspiration, collaboration, emotion, life experiences, pain, joy, all to come up with something personal yet accessible, and then finally choosing which ones leave the hard drive so fans can hear."

"This whole process that artists do all the time is underrated..many make it look a lot easier than it is. But, if I had to pick a record, it'd be this. One of my favourite songwriters who is actually a dope artist is Priscilia Renea and her album Coloured. She’s underrated because she’s not been discovered by many people yet but she’s about to achieve more greatness."

The record with my favourite cover art is…

"Again. Kanye West's Graduation. The Kanye bear was always a vibe on his first two previous albums but when this album dropped and he collabed with Takashi Murakami it introduced me to a whole new world of Japanese contemporary art."

The record with my favourite title is…

"Road Waves by Willie Jones. Ha Ha. This was the title of my first project I’ve released and it represents me. From the roads of Louisiana to the Waves of California to chase a dream."

The record I can't understand why everybody loves is…

"Actually, one of my own. 'Bachelorettes on Broadway' is a song that I thought only Nashville peeps would feel as it’s about that city and a particular street being the bachelorette party capital of the world."

"I didn’t think it would be so well received outside of Nashville and I still don’t understand how it’s done so well! But it goes down well even when we perform it in Europe. That song turned everyone out when I was in Scotland!"

The last record I bought was…

"I bought Little Big Town’s Night Fall.  I got to hang with some of them in Nashville and they are cool peeps. They always put out consistent smashes."

The record I'm most looking forward to hearing in 2020 is…

"The new Sam Hunt album. It’s been a while since my boy dropped a full project. His songs are dope and he doesn’t seem to rush to get stuff out so I’m sure it’s going to be smash after smash. I will buy this album!"

The greatest record of all time is…

"For me, it’s Mariah Carey’s 'One Sweet Day' with Boyz II Men.  It puts me in my feels. As you can see, I like a whole bunch of stuff from many genres!"
