My Record Collection by Zuzu

In My Record Collection, we dig down to the bottom of musicians' souls to find out what the most treasured parts of their record collection are. This week, it's the turn of rising singer-songwriter Zuzu, let's see what she chooses...

The first record I ever bought with my own money was...

"Probably Avril Lavigne's Best Damn Thing. I had records earlier than this, but this is the first one I remember buying myself. There weren't many people cooler to me at 12 years old! To be honest, there’s not many people cooler to me now!"

The record that made me want to be in a band was...

"Arctic Monkeys' Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not. This record changed my life really, Alex Turner had a voice like nothing else I had heard before and his lyrics were full of Northernisms I’d never heard at that point in my life yet either. They were and always will be instrumental in me finding my voice."

The record I've played more than any other is...

"If we are talking about a whole life span then it would be Revolver by The Beatles. This was my favourite album as a kid and I couldn’t tell you the number of times I've heard this album start to finish. To this day I never go a week without listening to it."

The record that always makes me feel good is...

"It's Lizzo's Cuz I Love You. This record properly changed me in a way. She inspires me to be myself. Lizzo is such an authentic artist. She really encapsulates what it’s like to be a young woman, she can be a boss and will always be unapologetic for who she is but she also shows the other side of herself in her music and on social media when she’s struggling. I just really respect her for her art and for her honesty."

The record I turn to when I'm feeling down is...

"It's Phoebe Bridgers' Punisher. I read somewhere that sad music is proven to make you feel better and I don't know if it’s true for everyone but it’s 100% true for me. There’s nothing I can say about Phoebe Bridges that everyone doesn’t already know but I just adore her. This record came at a time I really needed it. Thank you, Phoebe Bridgers, I Fudging love you."

The record I think is the most underrated of all time is...

"This is Bright Eyes - Digital Ash In A Digital Urn. I was OBSESSED with Bright Eyes when I was a teenager and I still am, to be honest. It always surprises me when people don’t know about this record. It was released at the exact same time as I’m Wide Awake It’s Morning which was a really popular record. This album is phenomenal, I can't recommend it enough."

The record with my favourite cover art is...

"Lorde – Melodrama. I adore this album and the cover matches the music so well. Sam McKinnnis is the artist who created the piece. There’s proper magic in this image, there’s so much movement in the brush strokes and I just find it really emotive. Love you Lorde!"

The record with my favourite title is...

"It's Courtney Barnett's Sometimes I Sit And Think, And Sometimes I Just Sit. This title just speaks to me haha. I go through moments of intense racing thoughts and then moments of just numb nothingness. I think a lot of people my age can relate to those existential moments Courtney Barnett puts into words so well."

The record I can't understand why everyone loves is...

"I know I'm about to get trolled for this, but I'm not a fan of Pink Floyd and Dark Side Of The Moon. It’s just not for me. Sorry everyone, I know it’s sacrilegious but it’s just how I feel."

The last record I bought was...

"It was Orla Gartland's Woman On The Internet. I’m so into Orla Gartland, she is just the coolest. She’s super talented and such a well-rounded artist. Love her authenticity and her level of graft. She inspires me to be the same. Big big fan of this album and of her in general!"

The record I'm most looking forward to hearing in 2021 is...

"The Queensway Tunnel!! My debut album comes out on the 12th of November and I think it’s the most I've been looking forward to anything coming out ever. Partly because I'm excited for people to hear it but mostly for the relief I'll feel when it’s finally done and out of my hands..."

The greatest record of all time is...

"Taylor Swift's Evermore. The answer to this question changes all the time for me but at the moment this is the record I can’t stop playing. It’s almost been a year since it came out and nothing has knocked it off the top of my list yet."

"I idolise Taylor Swift and always have. I think she is beyond genius and this album is her at her best. I love how Taylor just gets better and better, I've always felt like I've grown up alongside her records. That’s still the case to this day and right now we’re in the Evermore era!"
