National Album Day 2020: Limited Edition Vinyl Coming This Weekend... (Part 1)

National Album Day is coming this weekend on October 10 and this year will focus on a 1980s theme, so to celebrate the occasion some of the decade's most well-known artists are set to reissue one or more of their classic albums from the decade as limited edition vinyl in a whole range of colours!

There are more than 30 new reissues coming to stores this weekend on vinyl, so to celebrate their arrival we thought we'd round them up for you as a guide to what you can expect to find on the shelves this Saturday.

There are so many on the way that we've split our guide into two parts, the second of which will arrive on Thursday (October 8), but for now you can dig into Part One below...

The Stone Roses - Limited Edition Clear Vinyl (NAD20)

The Stone Roses: The Stone Roses

Limited Edition Clear Vinyl

Hallowed ground for many a Manchester resident, the eponymous debut album from The Stone Roses saw the band elevated to near-mythical status in the years that followed, inspiring the likes of Oasis and several others that followed in their wake. Featuring the likes of 'I Wanna Be Adored', 'She Bangs the Drums' and 'Waterfall', their debut came at the tail-end of the decade and could be seen as a transition point between the electronic sounds that had dominated the 1980s and the guitar-propelled years that followed.

Their debut joins our National Album Day line-up in the form of a new limited edition version pressed onto clear vinyl.

Graceland - Limited Edition Clear Vinyl (NAD20)

Paul Simon: Graceland

Limited Edition Clear Vinyl

Certainly his most successful solo album after the Simon & Garfunkel years and arguably his finest, Graceland saw Paul Simon not only taking inspiration from African styles and musicians, but actively bringing them into the fold and combining them with his own musical sensibilities to create one of the decade's most unique and memorable albums.

Featuring songs such as 'You Can Call Me Al' and 'Diamonds on the Soles of her Shoes', the album received a backlash at the time of its release for defying a cultural boycott of South Africa in order to work with its musicians, but Graceland has since been credited with helping to bring African rock to a western audience and the Grammy-winning LP returns to stores this weekend in the form of a limited edition on clear vinyl.

Duran Duran - Limited Edition White Vinyl (NAD20)

Duran Duran

Limited Edition White Vinyl

Ask anybody who was part of the New Romantic scene that sprang up at the beginning of the 1980s around London's Roxy Club and they'll probably tell you that Duran Duran were initially considered interlopers on their turf, hailing as they did from the Midlands. Nevertheless, they not only became one of the most popular bands of the decade, but were also the first to bring the term into public consciousness with a prophetic lyric featured in their breakthrough single 'Planet Earth': “Like some New Romantic looking for the TV sound / You'll see I'm right some other time”.

This and other early hits such as 'Girls on Film' can be found on their self-titled debut album, which joins our National album Day line-up this weekend in the form of a new limited edition reissue pressed onto white vinyl.

It’s My Life - Limited Edition Purple Vinyl (NAD20)

Talk Talk - It’s My Life

Limited Edition Purple Vinyl

Releasing just five albums over the course of an extraordinary career that saw talk Talk transform from effortless masters of synth-powered pop to genre-bending post-rock experimentalists, all under the leadership of the late, great Mark Hollis, the band have been cited as an influence by everyone from Radiohead and Elbow to Weezer and The Mars Volta.

Their second album, whose title track was once memorably covered by Gwen Stefani's former band No Doubt, first arrived in 1984 and gets a new lease of life this weekend in the form of a limited edition version pressed onto purple vinyl.

Searching for the Young Soul Rebels - Limited Edition Red Vinyl (NAD20)

Dexys Midnight Runners: Searching for the Young Soul Rebels

Limited Edition Red Vinyl

Emerging right at the beginning of the 1980s with their debut Searching for the Young Soul Rebels, Kevin Rowland's outfit weren't exactly punk, and not exactly soul either, but their own unique blend of style's set them apart from their peers and created some of the decade's most enduring hits (who among us hasn't danced at a wedding to 'Come On Eileen'?).

That particular dancefloor staple would arrive later, but their debut does feature another of their all-time greats in breakthrough single 'Geno' and the album is set to reemerge in stores this weekend with a new limited edition pressed onto red vinyl.

Raintown - Limited Edition Blue Vinyl (NAD20)

Deacon Blue: Raintown

Limited Edition Blue Vinyl

Scottish sextet Deacon Blue's debut album could almost be said to be Glasgow's unofficial soundtrack to 1987, conjuring images of blue-eyed optimism against backdrop of gloom and endless bad weather on songs such as 'Born in a Storm' and, of course, the title track 'Raintown'.

Still regarded by some fans as their masterpiece, the album returns to stores this weekend with new limited edition pressed onto blue vinyl.

The Blues Brothers - Limited Edition Transparent Blue Vinyl (NAD20)

Various Artists: The Blues Brothers OST

Limited Edition Transparent Blue Vinyl

Arguably the late James Belushi's finest hour, the paring of him and Dan Akroyd produced of the decade's most unique and memorable comedies in The Blues Brothers, the soundtrack for which became a huge hit its own right, thanks largely to a riotous cover version of 'Everybody Needs Somebody To Love'.

The Blue Brothers soundtrack joins our line-up of 80s vinyl treats this weekend with a limited edition reissue pressed on transparent blue vinyl heading in to stores on October 10.

Rocky IV - Limited Edition Picture Disc (NAD20)

Various Artists: Rocky IV OST

Limited Edition Picture Disc

Perhaps one of the last big blockbusters to feature the Cold War paradigm between the USA and the Soviet Union as a central plot point, Rocky IV quite literally pitched the high-tech, steroid-fuelled Ivan Drago against the good old-fashioned blood, sweat and tears of Sylvester Stallone's musclebound hero – and delivered a knockout of a soundtrack with it.

Featuring no fewer then three 80s anthems in James Brown's 'Living In America', John Cafferty's 'Hearts On Fire' and, of course, Survivor's 'Eye of the Tiger', the Rocky IV makes a triumphant return to the ring this weekend in the form of this stunning limited edition picture disc.

Eliminator - Limited Edition Yellow Vinyl (NAD20)

ZZ Top: Eliminator

Limited Edition Yellow Vinyl

Representing something of a shift in style compared with the gritty blues rock of their debut, the spectacularly-bearded trio ZZ Top nevertheless scored the biggest commercial hit of their career with their 1983 album Eliminator, which merged their growling rock riffs with big, brash synthesizers and slick production to produce one of the decade's most iconic albums.

Featuring hits including 'Legs', 'Gimme All Your Lovin'' and 'Sharp Dressed Man', Eliminator roars back into stores this weekend with a new limited edition reissue pressed onto yellow vinyl.

Top Gun - Limited Edition Picture Disc (NAD20)

Various Artists: Top Gun OST

Limited Edition Picture Disc

One of the biggest and best-loved blockbusters to emerge in the 1980s, Top Gun not only cemented the stardom of Tom Cruise for life, it also delivered along with it one the most era-defining soundtracks decade had to offer, overseen by the iconic paring of Harold Faltermeyer and Giorgio Moroder and including contributions from the likes of Miami Sound Machine, Cheap Trick and Kenny Loggins.

The biggest hit of all of them though, was surely Berlin's Moroder-penned smash 'Take My Breath Away', which appears along with the rest of the original tracklist on a new limited edition picture disc coming to stores this weekend.

Steve McQueen - Limited Edition Picture Disc (NAD20)

Prefab Sprout: Steve McQueen

Limited Edition Picture Disc

Led by one of pop music's most idiosyncratic minds in frontman Paddy McAloon, Prefab Sprout were a band with no real equal and their second album covers so much stylistic ground it's difficult to know where to start, other than to say it's one of their most beautifully evocative records.

Featuring some of their finest tunes in tracks like 'Bonny' and 'When Love Breaks Down', the album becomes part of our National Album Day celebrations this weekend when it returns to our shelves as a stunning limited edition picture disc.

Look Sharp! - Limited Edition Clear Vinyl (NAD20)

Roxette: Look Sharp!

Limited Edition Clear Vinyl

Sweden is no stranger to producing hit records with a rich pop music heritage that covers everyone from ABBA to the human-hit-factory that is songwriter Max Martin, but during the 1980s it was perhaps duo Roxette that could claim to be the country's most successful musical export. Marie Fredriksson and Per Gessle's seemingly effortless knack for producing an endless string of catchy, guitar-propelled pop tunes saw them in the region 60 million records in all.

While not their debut LP, 1988's Look Sharp! was certainly a real breakthrough moment and the first in a hat-trick of albums, along with 1991's 'Joyride' and 1992's 'Tourism', that were packed with songs which just never seemed to be not-on-the-radio. Look Sharp! joins our list of National Album Day releases this year with a new limited edition reissue pressed onto clear vinyl.

She's So Unusual - Limited Edition Red Vinyl (NAD20)

Cyndi Lauper: She's So Unusual

Limited Edition Red Vinyl

If the title of Cyndi Lauper's debut album was a response to the music industry's uncertainty over what, exactly, to do with an artist who looked and sounded quite unlike anyone else, then it's fair to say that the enduring success of a song like 'Girls Just Want To Have Fun' is vindication beyond any doubt.

Her debut album introduced one of the decade's most unique voices in pop music and She's So Unusual returns to stores for National Album Day this weekend with a new limited edition repress on red vinyl.

Dead Ringer - Limited Edition Violet Vinyl (NAD20)

Meat Loaf: Dead Ringer

Limited Edition Violet Vinyl

If there's a better definition of the 'difficult second album' than Meat Loaf's Dead Ringer, we'd like to see it. After the monster of a record that was his debut Bat Out of Hell, anything Meat Loaf did was always destined to be in its shadow, but while it didn't sell in the mind-numbing quantities achieved by its predecessor that didn't stop Dead Ringer from topping the UK Album Chart and earning platinum status.

Featuring as its operatic centrepiece the huge single 'Dead Ringer for Love', Meat Loaf's second LP returns to stores this weekend with limited edition reissue for National Album Day pressed onto violet vinyl.

Iron Maiden - 40th Anniversary Limited Edition Crystal Clear Picture Disc Vinyl

Iron Maiden: Iron Maiden - 40th Anniversary

Limited Edition Picture Disc

Undoubtedly one of the biggest bands of the 1980s and the flag-bearers of the era's 'new wave of British Heavy Metal', it all started here for Iron Maiden with their eponymous 1980 debut album, featuring the chugging rhythms, duelling guitars, screeching vocals and horror-movie imagery that became their trademark.

Their debut album celebrates its 40th birthday this year and joins our National Album Day vinyl bonanza this year with a a special 40th Anniversary limited edition crystal clear picture disc heading into stores this weekend.
