Nile Rodgers presents The Chic Organisation - Up All Night: The DISCO Edition
Don't call it a comeback...
What a year it has been for Nile Rodgers. Having been given the all clear after battling with prostrate cancer earlier this year, the guitarist & producer is enjoying something of a renaissance at the moment. As if working with Daft Punk on this year’s biggest album Random Access Memories wasn’t enough, Chic’s set at Glastonbury was one of the highlights of the festival. As well as this, the Daft Punk collaboration has led to Rodgers being one of the most in-demand producers in the world right now, having also worked on tracks with Avicii, David Guetta and Disclosure, to name a few.
"Listening through the tracks on this album, it is impossible not be impressed - not just by the sheer number of massive hits Nile Rodgers has written, produced and performed, but also the influence he has had on the sound of disco as a genre and music as a whole."
What’s in the box?
Up All Night… serves as a kind of career retrospective – and what a career it has been. This greatest hits package includes not only the Chic classics like ‘Le Freak’ and ‘Good Times’, but also a whole range of hits taking in everything from his work with the late, great Bernard Edwards for artists such as Sister Sledge and Diana Ross, to his solo productions with Madonna and David Bowie.
As the name Disco Edition suggests, this repack also features 12” mixes of tracks by Chic, Sister Sledge, Carly Simon and Sheila B. Devotion, as well as a 12” mix of Madonna’s ‘Like a Virgin’ and the single version of Duran Duran’s ‘The Reflex’. The 2CD set also includes some extra bonus tracks, including a ‘Chic Minimix’, which blasts through 20 classic Rodgers tracks in just under 7 minutes and features an even wider range of artists including Johnny Mathis, Norma Jean Wright and Debbie Harry. The repacked edition also includes a medley from this year’s Glastonbury set, featuring live versions of other Chic hits like ‘Everybody Dance’ and ‘My Forbidden Lover’, perfectly capturing the party vibe generated by Nile & co.
Under the influence…
Listening through the tracks on this album, it is impossible not be impressed - not just by the sheer number of massive hits Nile Rodgers has written, produced and performed, but also the influence he has had on the sound of disco as a genre and music as a whole. In particular, it’s difficult to imagine the sound of disco without his trademark funky guitar style – a part of disco’s sound so deeply ingrained that it often seems to sound like Nile Rodgers, even when it isn’t – so it’s easy to see why his favourite Fender Stratocaster guitar is nicknamed ‘The Hitmaker’.
Nile has recently been working with Fender on a signature model in an attempt to replicate his fabled guitar. When Fender’s master craftsman, Paul Waller, arrived to meticulously measure and map every detail of the instrument, Nile was told: "I've never seen a guitar like this before. It's so not to specs that a guitar like this would never get past the inspectors today." It seems the guitar is as much a one-off as the man himself.
Is it worth it?
Whether you are discovering the extent of Rodgers’ work for the first time or just a fan looking to get hold of some 12” gems and the Glastonbury performance, there’s a lot on offer here from a man whose unique style and sound has helped shape the music of today more than most.
