One Direction's Four: What You Need To Know
What’s The Background?
Four is - rather unsurprisingly - the fourth record from pop juggernauts One Direction and, much like everything else that they put their name to, is pretty much guaranteed to be a top-seller and elicit hormonal squeals of delight from almost everyone who gets their hands on it.
1D have recorded and released a new album every year since 2011. Last year’s Midnight Memories was their most successful record yet, becoming 2013’s best-selling album despite its late November release date. If that album was Harry, Niall and the boys developing towards a more grown up sound, Four sees One Direction embrace their edgier side in the company of a slew of special guests.
Who’s Producing It?
Where do we start? One Direction have worked with a cavalcade of producers over the years and Four is no different. Jake Gosling returns to the mixing desk once again after being central to One Direction’s superhit ‘Little Things’ from Midnight Memories, while Julian Bunetta and several others are also involved. In Camp 1D, Louis Tomlinson and Liam Payne expand their songwriting portfolio significantly, with their fingerprints being evident on almost every track.
Any Special Guests?
One Direction have clearly roped in several of their superstar friends to contribute to the album and subsequently Four is something of a star-studded affair. Ed Sheeran continues his dalliance with 1D, writing ballad ‘18’ after previously penning ‘Little Things’ and ‘Moments’ for the band. Irish rockers Kodaline also lent a hand, along with The 1975, Emeli Sande, John Legend, Naughty Boy along with Benji and Joel Madden of Good Charlotte fame who, incidentally, described the album as “crazy”.
What Are The Standout Tracks?
If you were to ask any of the band’s hardcore fans, of which there are many, the answer would be “all of them” but the pop coalition formed between 1D and Ed Sheeran on the aforementioned ‘18’ immediately stands out above the rest. Having said that, the first cut from the record ‘Fireproof’ is also worthy of mention.
Does It Deliver?
To its intended audience, the answer to this is an overwhelming “yes”. If you’re yet to be a One Direction convert it’s unlikely that Four will sway you but for the swathes of fans the group have assembled over the last few years, this is THE biggest album release of the year. A One Direction album release is an event nowadays and the ensuing tour which will follow the release of this record promises to be one of the most lucrative in history and whatever your allegiance to the five twenty-somethings in One Direction, it’s difficult to deny the massive appeal they have across all four corners of the globe.
Four will be available in hmv stores and to download from Monday November 17th.
