Original lyrics to Don McLean's 'American Pie' sell for $1.2 million at auction
The original manuscript and notes for Don McLean's classic anthem 'American Pie' have sold for $1.2 million at auction.
The 16-page manuscript was sold at Christie's Auction House in New York this afternoon (April 7th) for a fee that is worth over £800,000. The manuscript includes the song's lyrics, plus notes from the writer and an extra verse which was never recorded. The identity of the buyer is currently unknown.
Previously, McLean explained to the auction house why he had decided to sell, stating: "I thought it would be interesting as I reach age 70 to release this work product on the song 'American Pie' so that anyone who might be interested will learn that this song was not a parlor game. It was an indescribable photograph of America that I tried to capture in words and music and then was fortunate enough through the help of others to make a successful recording."
The song was originally released in 1971 and spent four weeks at Number One in the United States.
