Skrillex – Recess – What You Need To Know

At long last! The pint-sized, arena-filling DJ who is perennially clad in black has announced his debut album. As with everything else the man known formally as known Sonny Moore has done, this came as a total surprise. But it's here, it's called Recess and it’s out on Monday (March 17th). Here's what you need to know about the album…

What’s The Background?

We've been waiting for a Skrillex album for a long long time. Ever since his 2009 EP 'Gypsyhook' in fact. In between times there have been six EPs, countless collaborations, numerous big tours and production stints on tracks with the likes of Korn, AS$P Rocky and former girlfriend Ellie Goulding.

We knew he was working on an album, but there was no word on when or how it would emerge. It was first supposed to emerge in 2011 under the name Voltage, but never did. Skrillex later said this was due to the theft of two of his laptops, he must have tightened up his security since then, because the thing is finally set to come out…

Who Are The Guest Vocalists?

It's a right cast of characters. First up on opener 'All's Fair In Love And Brostep' (What. A. Title.) are the Ragga Twins, who also appear on later track 'Ragga Bomb', then hip-hop oddball Fatman Scoop who guests along producers Kill The Noise on title track 'Recess'.

Next up are KillaGraham and Sam Dew who appear on 'Stranger', followed by US R'n'B type Alvin Risk, who adds his sultry vocals to 'Try It Out'. Hotly tipped Chance The Rapper is up next, appearing on the weirdly loose and jazzy 'Coast Is Clear' alongside Mike Will Made It.

Super producer Diplo steps up next, adding his own personal touch to 'Dirty Vibe' alongside G-Dragon and C-L. Finally, not so much a guest appearance for Niki & The Dove, who's 2012 single 'DJ Ease My Mind' gets reworked and sonically pulped into 'Ease My Mind'.

Who's At The Controls?

Skrillex himself of course.

What Are The Standout Tracks?

If you want the womp, thump and power of Skrillex's early EPs, then you'll adore the likes of 'All's Fair In Love And Brostep' and 'Try It Out', if you're looking for something a little more refined, then try the subtle grooves of 'Dirty Vibe' and, if you want a pure party banger, stick on 'Recess', the place will erupt.
