Soul Singer Percy Sledge passes away aged 73
Percy Sledge, famous for his hit ‘When a Man Loves a Woman’, has passed away aged 73.
Steve Green, Sledge’s agent, confirmed the news yesterday evening that the singer died in his home in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on Tuesday April 14th.
“He was one of my first acts”, Green sad. “He was a terrific person and you don’t find that in this business very often. He was truly a standout.”
Percy Sledge started his career as a nurse in the early 60’s before honing his voice to the point that he became one of the defining figures in the soul genre of that era with songs like ‘Warm and Tender Love’, ‘It Tears Me Up’ and ‘Take Time To Know Her’.
It was ‘When a Man Loves a Woman’ which was Sledge’s defining hit though, garnering him a #1 in the United States and a loyal army of fans. The song received praise from a new generation back in 1991 when Michael Bolton’s cover of the song hit the top of the Billboard charts.
Sledge, who was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ten years ago, is survived by his wife and children.
