This Month's Vinyl Picks: July 2016
The Avalanches, The Rolling Stones and Beastie Boys are our vinyl picks for the month of July...
The Avalanches - Wildflower
The Avalanches' groundbreaking debut album Since I Left You represented a high watermark for the creative use of sampling, utilising upwards of 3,500 samples weaved into a mind-boggling tapestry of musical styles and flavours, but the wait for a follow-up has been a long one. In the 16 years that have passed since their debut, many of the band's original members have departed and even though there have been rumours and reports of a second album circling for years now, even the most dedicated fans were beginning to wonder if it would ever see the light of day.
Those who kept the faith however are about to be handsomely rewarded; this month the Australian outfit finally release Wildflower, featuring a list of collaborators that includes Danny Brown, MF Doom, Mercury Rev's Jonathan Donahue and Biz Markie, among several others. It's available on two different vinyl formats, including an eight-panel double gatefold vinyl and a standard double LP. If you only buy one LP in July, make it this. You won't regret it.
The Rolling Stones - Exile On Main Street
One of six classic albums to be re-released having been half-speed mastered by the folks at Abbey Road studios, Exile On Main Street is still considered by many to be the Rolling Stones' finest work and the new reissue arrives in stores on vinyl this month. In case you're wondering what 'half-speed mastering' is, the new technique involves playing back the master tapes at half the normal speed, allowing the vinyl master to pick up more detail from the original tapes, making for a pristine reproduction with sound quality not heard before on wax. If you're a Stones fan thinking of re-stocking your collection with vinyl versions of your favourite albums, this is the perfect place to start.
Beastie Boys - Check Your Head
The Beastie Boys are undoubtedly one of the most revered groups in hip-hop and Check Your Head is among their best albums, but one that has been out of print on vinyl for some time. However, help is at hand with this newly remastered edition and it's one of several titles that is currently only available at hmv. The new vinyl will go on general sale in a couple of months, but you can get your hands on it right now in your local hmv store and online.
