This Month's Vinyl Picks: May 2017

Leftfield, At The Drive-In and a 50th anniversary reissue of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band are amongst our vinyl picks for the month of May...

Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band

Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band - Anniversary Edition

The seminal 1967 album from Liverpool's most famous sons needs no introduction from us, but to celebrate its 50th year a newly remixed version of the album arrives in stores on May 26th and includes a 2-LP vinyl edition featuring a faithfully reproduced sleeve (including cardboard cut-outs) and a second disc with selection of alternate takes and unreleased versions of the album's original 13 tracks.

Different Days

The Charlatans – Different Days

The Manchester band release their thirteenth album on May 26th and Different Days includes a white vinyl edition which is exclusively available at hmv. The new album includes 13 new tracks and features guest appearances from Paul Weller, Johnny Marr and New Order's Gillian Gilbert.

Leftism 22

Leftfield – Leftism 22

Sony Music CMG

To celebrate the 22nd anniversary of their classic dance album from 1995, Leftfield reissue a new version of the album called Leftsim 22 on May 5th and in addition to a CD version which features some extra tracks and outtakes, there's also a 3-LP vinyl edition featuring the original track listing, pressed onto 180g heavyweight black vinyl.

Fear of the Dark

Iron Maiden - Fear of the Dark

As part of the first round in a series of vinyl reissues from metal giants Iron Maiden, fans can purchase the new vinyl versions of No Prayer for the Dying and Fear of the Dark as part of a set which includes a specially designed collector's box, with enough space to host all 12 of the upcoming vinyl reissues, as well as the 3-LP vinyl edition of their most recent album, Book of the Dead. The first batch arrives on May 19th, you can find details on the rest of the release schedule here.

Inter Alia

At The Drive-In – Inter Alia

Rise Records

The reformed At The Drive-In, featuring Mars Volta members Cedric Bixler and Omar Rodriguez, return with their first album in 17 years on May 5th and the vinyl edition of Inter Alia (also stylised as In•ter a•li•a) is a beauty. Pressed onto 'bone & black' splattered vinyl, this is definitely one worth adding to your collection and numbers will be limited, so get in there quickly if you want to nab yourself a copy.

Blondie – Pollinator

The New York punk legends return on May 5th with their new album Pollinator, which features a list of guests collaborators that includes Johnny Marr, Laurie Anderson, Joan Jett, Charli XCX, Sia, The Strokes' Nick Valensi, Blood Orange's Dev Hynes and The Gregory Brothers, with production from John Congleton. There are two vinyl options here, a standard 12” vinyl is available, but if you want to push the boat out a little bit for something special then go for the 7” box set.

A Kind Revolution

Paul Weller – A Kind Revolution

The man they call 'The Modfather' is back with his new record, A Kind Revolution, on May 12th. The new album includes guest appearances from Robert Wyatt and Boy George with the latter adding vocals to 'One Tear'. Again, there are two vinyl versions available – a standard 12” and a deluxe edition box set comprising 5 x 10” and booklet.

Figure 8

Elliot Smith – Figure 8

The singer-songwriter is set to reissue his entire back catalogue on vinyl on May 19th and, four money, the best of the bunch is this little gem released in 2000. Not as bombastic as some of his earlier records, but this is Smith at his most refined and it's a record well worth looking into, whether you're revisiting or discovering his music for the first time.

Resistance Radio: The Man in the High Castle Album
