This Month's Vinyl Picks: October 2017
A new Liam Gallagher album, a gorgeous T. Rex box set and the soundtrack to Steven King's It are amongst our pick of the best vinyl coming your way in October...
T-Rex: 40th Anniversary Picture Disc Collection
October looks like a bumper month for vinyl box sets, with a 5LP reissue of The Smiths' The Queen Is Dead, a career retrospective from The Maccabees and a huge collection from metal label Nuclear Blast all arriving before the end of October, but one of the highlights on the horizon is this new picture disc collection commemorating 40 years since the untimely death of T. Rex frontman Marc Bolan. Produced by Demon Records and available exclusively at hmv, this new five-disc set of 7” singles features photography from Barry Plummer and includes T. Rex classics such as 'Metal Guru', '20th Century Boy' and 'Children of the Revolution', among several others. The box set is due to arrive in stores and online on October 13th.
Liam Gallagher: As You Were
Warner Bros Records
After the acrimonious departure of elder Gallagher sibling Noel from Oasis and two albums with the band's remaining members under the name Beady Eye, frontman Liam Gallagher is going it alone with his first solo album. Produced by Greg Kurstin and Dan Grech-Marguerat, Gallagher's debut As You Were arrives on October 6th on all formats, including two different vinyl versions; a standard black edition and a limited edition version on white vinyl.
Jessie Ware: Glasshouse
After two well-received albums, Jessie Ware returns with her third in October, written and recorded during a break from performing while the singer was pregnant with her first child. Announced in June this year along with the unveiling of the album's first single 'Midnight', Glasshouse features production and songwriting contributions by Benny Blanco, Andrew 'Pop' Wansel, Francis and the Lights, Cashmere Cat and Ed Sheeran, among others. The album arrives on all formats on October 20th and will be issued on two types of vinyl; a standard black vinyl version and a limited edition version on peach-coloured vinyl that's available exclusively from hmv.
St. Vincent: Masseducation
After the beguiling brilliance of St. Vincent's eponymous fourth album (not including 2012's Love This Giant, a joint endeavour with erstwhile Talking Heads frontman David Byrne), Annie Clark returns in October with her fifth full-length offering. Bleachers mainman Jack Antonoff replaces John Congleton - with whom St. Vincent has recorded her previous three albums – as producer on the new album, while there are also guest appearances from Doveman, Kamasi Washington and Cara Delevigne, the latter adding vocals on the chorus to 'Pills'.
Masseducation includes the singles 'New York' and 'Los Ageless', and is set to arrive on all formats on October 13th, including an LP edition on black vinyl.
Benjamin Wallfisch: It OST
English composer Benjamin Wallfisch has been busy recently, providing the scores for films such as Hidden Figures, Annabelle: Creation and A Cure for Wellness, not to mention his work on the soundtrack for the hotly-anticipated Blade Runner sequel arriving later in October, but he's also the man behind the music for the newly-rebooted Stephen King adaptation It. Wallfisch's creepy score arrived on CD in mid-September, but now a there's beautifull presented special edition picture disc featuring Wallfisch's score coming exclusively to hmv on October 27th.
Robert Plant: Carry Fire
As the former frontman of Led Zeppelin, Robert Plant needs no introduction from us, but unlike so many of his peers from Led Zep's heyday, Plant's inimitable voice shows no signs of fading, nor does his restless sense of creativity. With the three solo albums released under his own name since 2005 – Mighty ReArranger, Band of Joy and Lullaby and... The Ceaseless Roar – having placed in the UK Album Chart at No.4, No.3 and No.2 respectively, his latest album could, if that trend continues, land the singer his first chart-topping album in the UK since Led Zeppelin climbed to the top spot in 1979 with In Through the Out Door.
Carry Fire includes the singles 'The May Queen' and 'Bones of Saints', and is due to arrive on all formats on October 13th, including a black vinyl edition.
Marilyn Manson: Heaven Upside Down
The high priest of goth returns in October with Heaven Upside Down, the tenth Marilyn Manson album and his first since 2015's Pale Emperor, which saw the band hook up with Guardians of the Galaxy composer Tyler Bates. Despite an incident between the pair on that album's accompanying tour that reportedly culminated in Manson wielding a box cutter at his producer, the pair have evidently patched things up as Bates returns to production duties for its follow-up, which includes the recent single 'We Know Where You F***ing Live'. Set to arrive in stores on October 6th, there's a standard black vinyl edition as well as a limited edition version pressed onto white vinyl, the latter available exclusively at hmv.
Stormzy: Gang Signs & Prayer
A full eight months after Stormzy's hotly-anticipated debut Gang Signs & Prayer hit the shelves in our stores, October will finally see the album released on vinyl for the first time. There's nothing fancy about this one, just a standard black vinyl edition, but it's still a must for vinyl-loving grime fans and includes the singles 'Big For Your Boots', 'Shut Up' and 'Cold', as well as appearances from the likes of MNEK, Wretch 32, Ghetts, Kwabs and Raleigh Ritchie, among many others. The vinyl edition hits the shelves on October 13th.
George Michael: Listen Without Prejudice
Sony Music CMG
First released in 1991 as the follow-up to his hugely successful 1987 solo debut album Faith, Listen Without Prejudice Vol.1 was originally scheduled for reissue in November 2016, but the release was initially postponed until the following April and then, following the singer's tragic death in December 2016, was indefinitely put on hold. However, earlier this year it was announced that the reissue was back on and on October 20th you'll be able to get your hands on a brand new vinyl copy for the first time in 25 years.
Ian Dury & The Blockheads: New Boots & Panties!!
October will see the 40th anniversary of an album many still regard as the late Ian Dury's finest hour, and to celebrate the occasion New Boots and Panties!! is set to be reissued on various vinyl formats on October 27th. In addition to a standard 2LP version on black vinyl, there's also a box set complete with both LP and CDs, but if you want something a bit special there's also a limited edition version pressed onto orange and green 'splatter' vinyl.
