Where to Start With... Justin Bieber

Unless you've been living in a cave for the last few years, you probably don't need us to explain who Justin Bieber is. In the last few years, the Canadian has gone from Youtube sensation to multi-platinum selling, chart-conquering pop phenomenon, earning himself an army of loyal fans - or 'Beliebers' - in the process.

It's been three years since his last album, 2012's Believe, topped the album charts on both sides of the Atlantic and those intervening years have been something of a rollercoaster for the young star. In that time, Bieber has completed an extensive world tour, appeared on tracks with will.i.am and Tyga, even popping up in the video for Carly Rae Jepsen's 'I Really Like You'. He's also been involved in several high-profile run-ins with the law, been the youngest ever subject of a particularly brutal Comedy Central roast and given fans a scare when he collapsed on stage in the middle of a show at London's 02, no doubt the result of an exhausting schedule.

Despite all of the above, there seems to be no stopping the Canadian singer and after a difficult couple of years Bieber returned in August with 'What Do You Mean', the first single from his new album Purpose and the first of his singles to top the charts both here and in the US. He followed that up with a second single, 'Sorry', and took home no fewer than five awards at this year's MTV EMA, including Best Male.

If the singles already released form his new album are anything to go by, Purpose – which arrives in stores on Friday 13th November – looks set to be another unstoppable juggernaut of a record. With guest appearances from Halsey, Big Sean and Travis Scott, as well as a list of production credits that includes Skrillex, Diplo, Benny Blanco and Rick Rubin, Purpose pulls out all the stops and announces loudly and clearly that Bieber is back - and he means business.

His fans will no doubt love it, his detractors are unlikely to find much here to change their minds, but whatever your stance on this polarising artist, Bieber is going nowhere just yet.

You can preview and order Purpose on the right-hand side of this page and find the video 'What Do You Mean' below. Beneath that we've picked out five key tracks from his career so far as a handy guide for new initiates and non-Beliebers...

'Runaway Love' (Kanye West Remix)

Originally one of the cuts from Bieber's debut album My World 2.0, we've gone for the Kanye West remix featuring Wu-Tang Can's Raekwon, adding a straight-up hip-hop edge to this radio-friendly R&B number.

Taken from Believe, 'Boyfriend' sounds for all the world like it could be one of The Neptunes' many chart-topping productions, but that's probably down to a production team that includes longtime Pharrell collaborator Mike Posner, who brings his influence to bear on what is still one of Bieber's biggest tunes.

'Beauty And A Beat'

Bieber goes full EDM on this track from Believe thanks to some nifty production work from Zedd and Max Martin, helped along by guest rapper Nicki Minaj.

'Yellow Raincoat'

Not one of his biggest hits, but we've included this cut from Believe: Acoustic as it's one of the rare moments when all the studio trickery is stripped away, leaving only Justin's voice and guitar. The result is this mellow, lilting number that reminds you just why so many screaming fans have fallen in love with that voice.

'Where Are Ü Now'

One of the standout moments from Purpose, this track was initially featured on Jack Ü , the collaboration album between dubstep overlord Skrillex and Major Lazer's Diplo, but evidently it was just too good to leave off the new album. One listen should be enough to tell you why...
