10 Cloverfield Lane - Five Reasons You’ll Love It

Most films, especially sequels and spin-offs, are guaranteed a year’s worth of news, trailers and build-up to get fans excited, but not 10 Cloverfield Lane. The movie, which is a spiritual sequel to JJ Abrams’ 2008 smash-hit sci-fi thriller Cloverfield, was kept secret up until earlier this year when a surprise trailer emerged. So secret in fact that key cast members have admitted that when they were sent the script it was on the condition it would be immediately deleted once they’d read it, not unlike the messages agents send in Mission: Impossible.

The sequel, which hits DVD shelves on Monday (July 25th, you can pre-order it on the right-hand side of the page), stars Coen Brothers’ favourite John Goodman, Scott Pilgrim Vs The World’s Mary Elizabeth Winstead and The Newsroom’s John Gallagher Jnr, with first time director Dan Trachtenberg behind the camera and Whiplash’s Damien Chazelle among the writers. A stellar line-up indeed.

It follows Winstead’s Michelle, a wannabe fashion designer who has just left her long-time boyfriend and is driving away to a new life, after hours on the road she is suddenly hit by an out of control car and winds up dying by the side of the highway. Hours later she wakes up in the basement chained to a wall with an IV in her arm and discovers that Goodman’s Howard has rescued her, but is keeping her captive in his farmhouse as an attack has made it unsafe to go outside. Joined there by Emmett, an apprentice of Howard’s, the trio are locked in the house together, with no knowledge of what actually lies above, eventually trust and relations become very, very frayed…

It’s a tense, lean thriller and well worth your time, here are five reasons why…

The tension is almost unbearable…

It might be an accompanying movie to Cloverfield, but it has none of its size or scale. This is a proper three-hander and most of it could be stage play given how much you really on the tension between the characters.

The movie will keep you guessing from beginning to end…

It endlessly twists and turns, you will not be bored for a second.

John Goodman is exceptional…

Most of Goodman’s roles are jovial, comedic ones, but here, as the decidedly creepy conspiracy obsessed Howard, he’s captivating from beginning to end. It’s an incredible performance.

As are Winstead and Gallagher Jnr…

Goodman’s creepiness is matched perfectly by Gallagher Jnr’s murky charm and Winstead’s endless paranoia, all three are on top form and perfectly cast.

The ending is incredible…

We’ve been forced to swear on the safety of many family members to give away no spoilers and we won’t, but we will say this, the ending is incredible and completely unexpected.

10 Cloverfield Lane will be released into cinemas on Friday (March 18th) and is available to pre-order now on DVD, Blu-Ray and hmv Exclusive Steelbook.
