10 of the best Blu-ray & 4K reissues coming in August
This month we introduce our fabulous new and exclusive Cine Edition range, add three stone-cold classics to The Premium Collection and celebrate the 40th birthday of an intergalactic icon...
The Goonies - Cine Edition
We could list any number of fantastic coming of age films to emerge during the 1980s from Rob Reiner's Stand By Me to Joel Schumacher's vampire-themed classic The Lost Boys, but The Goonies is perhaps one of the most universally known and loved films of the decade. It's fitting, then, that The Goonies should become one of the first additions to our exciting new and exclusive Cine Edition range, a new series of collectable limited editions packed with exclusive extras and bonuses that you won't find anywhere else.
The Cine Edition of The Goonies makes its arrival in stores on August 31st in a limited edition gift box that includes a new 4K presentation of the film itself, a range of extras including commentary with director Richard Donner, a Making of The Goonies featurette, deleted scenes and the music video for Cyndi Lauper's 'The Goonies 'r' Good Enough', as well as an exclusive embroidered patch, collectable button badges and even a reproduction of One Eyed Willy's treasure map.
As with all the new Cine Edition range, numbers are limited and there are only 1500 copies available so pre-order now to avoid missing out!
Flash Gordon: 40th Anniversary Collector's Edition
Of all Mike Hodges' wonderful films, Flash Gordon is undoubtedly the silliest, but it's also surely his most beloved and his high-camp adaptation starring Sam J. Jones, Max von Sydow and Brian Blessed celebrates its 40th birthday this year.
To mark the occasion, StudioCanal are set to reissue a huge bumper box set edition for the film's 40th anniversary, which heads into stores on August 10th. With some 500 hours reportedly going to a newly restored version using 4K scans of the original 35mm film negatives, the new anniversary edition is not only the first time the film has been seen in 4K UHD but also comes packed with a massive range of extras.
These include a selection of memorabilia such as a sew-on patch, art cards, two illustrated booklets and a reproduction of the original Flash Gordon comic strip, as well as soundtrack CD and bonus discs crammed with special features. The most interesting of which is a new documentary film documenting the story behind original director Nicolas Roeg's hiring and subsequent firing, with a detailed exploration of his vision for the film, but there are also loads of interviews with cast and crew on offer and plenty more besides.
Beetlejuice - Cine Edition
The second addition to our new and exclusive Cine Edition range is solid gold comedy classic from the gothic mind of Tim Burton. Starring Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis as a couple whose untimely demise in a car crash sees them return as ghosts to haunt the new inhabitants of the former home, Beetlejuice is best remembered for a wonderful, scenery-chewing performance from Michael Keaton, whom Burton would later direct for second time in his adaptation of Batman.
The Cine Edition version arrives in stores on August 31st and is limited to just 1500 copies. Alongside a new 4K presentation of the film itself there are a range of exclusive extras including a limited edition gift box, glow-in-the-dark embroidered patch, poster, collectable chalk and a soundtrack CD sampler showcasing Danny Elfman's score and an iconic performance from Harry Belafonte, as well as a theatrical trailer and an 3 episodes of the animated Beetlejuice series.
2001: A Space Odyssey – Titans of Cult Steelbook
It's not an understatement to say that Stanley Kubrick's magnum opus 2001: A Space Odyssey changed the face of cinema. His baffling visual extravaganza has seen many reissues down the years but this month Kubrick's masterpiece becomes the latest addition to the rapidly expanding Titans of Cult series.
Their new Steelbook edition makes its way into stores on August 31st and in addition to its stunning case it also includes some extra goodies, with an exclusive enamel pin, an embroidered patch and a disc of bonus material that includes a handful of mini-features on Kubrick and sci-fi in general, conceptual artwork for the film and a 2001 Channel 4 documentary The Making of a Myth, examining the film's storied legacy.
Airplane! - Premium Collection
David Zucker, Jerry Zucker, Jim Abrahams
The first of three absolutely corking additions to our exclusive Premium Collection this month, Airplane! Is a bona fide comedy classic and surely one of Leslie Nielsen's funniest performances on the big screen. We could easily reel off some of the film's oft-quoted gags but instead we'll just say that the Premium Collection edition makes its arrival in stores on August 24th and comes with the usual selection of exclusive art cards, lobby poster and collectable slipcase.
In addition to a new 4K restoration of the film there's also a range of bonus features including the original commentary from writer-directors Jerry Zucker, David Zucker and Jim Abrahams, a new 'Filmmaker Focus' featurette on the directors, an optional isolated score and a new Q&A with the filmmakers recorded in January 2020 at Hollywood's Egyptian Theatre.
Fatal Attraction – Premium Collection
The second new addition is this classic thriller starring Michael Douglas and Glenn Close which not only ranks as one of the steamiest films to feature on a cinema screen during the 1980s, but also holds the dubious honour of giving rise to the term “bunny boiler” thanks to a murderously magnetic performance from Close (the first of many to unjustly miss out on an Oscar).
The Premium Collection edition arrives on August 24th and alongside the exclusive art cards and poster are a selection of bonus features including commentary by director Adrian Lyne, a Filmmaker Focus featurette with Lyne discussing the film, rehearsal footage, the original trailer and an alternate ending with and introduction from Lyne.
Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure
It's fair to say that one of the most unexpected developments on the new movie front in recent months has been the entirely unlikely (but entirely welcome) news that a third Bill & Ted movie will soon be arriving on cinema screens, and in a neat bit of timing the movie that birthed the series back in 1989 is also retruning, this time in 4K UHD for the first time.
The new 4K edition hits the shelves on August 10th and don't worry if you've yet to make the jump to 4K just yet – there's a new blu-ray edition too which benefits from the newly restored scans, meaning it'll look better on Blu-ray than it ever has.
To Catch a Thief – Premium Collection
Last but by no means least to join our exclusive Premium Collection this month is this solid gold classic from none other than the master of suspense himself, Alfred Hitchcock. Led by a stellar pairing of Cary Grant and Grace Kelly, To Catch a Thief is one of Hitchcock's very best and the new Premium Collection edition is set to land in stores on August 24th.
Alongside the exclusive art card selection and lobby poster there's also a handful of bonus features on offer, including a new Filmmaker Focus mini-feature on the film by Leonard Maitlin, a feature on the relationship between Grant and Kelly, commentary by film historian Dr. Drew Casper and the original theatrical trailer.
Revolutionary Girl Utena: Saga of the Black Rose
Few anime series in recent years have consistently won such high critical praise than Revolutionary Girl Utena and the second instalment in the series, The Black Rose Saga, makes its way into stores in full this month, with a third part to follow in September. Directed once again by Kunihiko Ikuhara, Part 2 of the series hits the shelves in stores on August 17th.
The Last House on the Left
Arrow have been doing some fine work over recent years with their series of cult reissues and the latest addition to their collection is no exception, with an early Wes Craven horror classic set to arrive in stores later
this month. Craven's directorial debut, Last House on the Left gave audiences their first taste of the gory, shocking and often hilarious scenes that he would become known for.
Arrow's new limited edition reissue includes a 1080p presentation of the original, unrate version of the film, as well as a huge range of extras such as various commentary options, a feature examining the film's legacy and a selection of extended and deleted scenes, amongst many other bonus goodies.
