hmv previews... 2018's Best Movies - Reboots/Remakes

Over the next two weeks, we're going to be previewing 100 of 2018's best movies. We continue with the reboots and remakes you can expect this year...


Robin Hood

Starring: Taron Egerton, Jamie Foxx, Eve Hewson, Jamie Dornan, Ben Mendelsohn and Paul Anderson

Director: Otto Bathurst

Release Date: September 21st


The original outlaw gets another reboot in 2018, this time with Kingsman star Taron Egerton picking up the bow and arrow.

Jamie Foxx plays Little John, Jamie Dornan is Will Scarlett and Eve Hewson (daughter of some chap called Bono…) is Maid Marian. They will all face down Ben Mendelsohn's Sheriff of Nottingham.

Plot details are scant at this point, but a much “grittier” take on the story has been promised.


The Predator

Starring: Boyd Holbrook, Olivia Munn, Trevante Rhodes, Keegan-Michael Key, Sterling K. Brown and Jacob Tremblay

Director: Shane Black

Release Date: August 3rd


Shane Black gets to put his own spin on the dreaded monster for this new blockbuster.

A reboot of the original 1987 classic, plot details are again scant, but Black has promised a lot of humour and that “spines bleed a lot”. Here’s to that...


Bumblebee: The Movie

Starring: Hailee Steinfeld, John Cena, Jorge Lendeborg Jr., Rachel Crow and Pamela Adlon

Release Date: December 21st


Bumblebee, one of everyone’s favourite Transformers, gets his own movie in the first of many, many planned spin-offs.

Set 20 years before the events of the first Transformers movie, we find ourselves in 1987 as Bumblebee takes refuge in a small California beach town junkyard.

Once there, Hailee Steinfeld's Charlie Watson learns that it is no ordinary Volkswagen Beetle...



How The Grinch Stole Christmas

Starring: Benedict Cumberbatch

Director: Peter Candeland, Yarrow Cheney

Release Date: November 9th


Benedict Cumberbatch voices Dr Seuss’s famous grouch in this new animation, which follows The Grinch as he hatches a scheme to ruin Christmas when the residents of Whoville plan their annual holiday celebration

A Star Is Born

Starring: Bradley Cooper, Lady Gaga, Sam Elliott, Andrew Dice Clay and Dave Chappelle

Director: Bradley Cooper

Release Date: May 18th


The classic romantic comedy gets a third remake, this time with Bradley Cooper starring and directing and Lady Gaga starring.

Cooper plays Jackson Maine, a movie star who decides to help a Gaga’s Ally, a promising young singer/actress, to find fame, even as age and alcoholism send his own career into a downward spiral.


Ocean’s 8

Starring: Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Awkwafina, Rihanna, Helena Bonham Carter and James Corden

Director: Gary Ross

Release Date: June 22nd


The movie stars Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Sarah Paulson, Mindy Kaling, Awkwafina, Rihanna and Helena Bonham Carter, with Richard Armitage, James Corden and Dakota Fanning in supporting roles.

Anna Wintour, Alexander Wang, Kim Kardashian, Maria Sharapova, Derek Blasberg, Lauren Santo Domingo, Zayn Malik, Kendall Jenner, Katie Holmes, Olivia Munn, Adriana Lima, Hailey Baldwin, Serena Williams, Kylie Jenner and Zac Posen will make cameo appearances in the film.

The movie follows Bullock's Debbie, the estranged sister of Danny Ocean, George Clooney's original mastermind of the series. After being released from prison Debbie attempts to pull off the heist of the century at New York City's star-studded annual Met Gala. Her first stop is to assemble the perfect crew.


The Girl In The Spider’s Web

Starring: Claire Foy, Sverrir Gudnason and Sylvia Hoeks

Director: Fede Alvarez

Release Date: October 26th


The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, which was adapted from the first novel in Stieg Larsson's bestselling trilogy, was released in 2011 and starred Daniel Craig, Rooney Mara and Robin Wright. It was a modest box office hit, but despite that, no sequel was confirmed.

Now the series is being rebooted with The Crown's Claire Foy in the lead role of Lisbeth Salander and Fede Alvarez, director of Don't Breathe, in the director's chair. He will work from a script from Peaky Blinders' creator Steven Knight.

The story follows Foy’s eccentric hacker Salander and Gudnason’s investigative Mikael Blomkvist as they are drawn into a deadly world of computer hackers and corrupt government officials.


Death Wish

Starring: Bruce Willis, Vincent D'Onofrio, Elisabeth Shue, Dean Norris and Kimberly Elise

Director: Eli Roth

Release Date: March 2nd


Charles Bronson’s hard-hitting 1974 action thriller gets a 2018 reboot with Bruce Willis leading the way.

Willis plays Paul Kersey, a doctor in Chicago who becomes a vigilante when his wife is murdered and his daughter brutally attacked by robbers.


Truth Or Dare

Starring: Lucy Hale, Tyler Posey, Violett Beane, Nolan Gerard Funk, Hayden Szeto and Sophia Taylor Ali.

Director: Jeff Wadlow

Release Date: May 4th


Pretty Little Liars’ Lucy Hale and Teen Wolf’s Tyler Posey lead this teenage horror jump-a-thon, which takes the much-loved party game and turns things sinister.

In this movie, we follow a group of college students who are haunted by spirits after playing the supernatural version of Truth or Dare.



Starring: Jamie Lee Curtis, Judy Greer and Nick Castle

Director: David Gordon Green

Release Date: October 19th


40 years after the original movie scared the s**t out of everyone who saw it, Michael Myers returns once again to raise more hell.

This time, Jamie Lee Curtis’s Laurie Strode comes for her final confrontation with Myers, the masked figure who has haunted her since she narrowly escaped his killing spree on Halloween night all those years ago...
