Over the next two weeks, we're going to be previewing 100 of 2019's best movies. Today, it's time for action...


Hobbs And Shaw

Starring: Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Eiza Gonzalez, Eddie Marsan, Vanessa Kirby, Idris Elba

Director: David Leitch

Release Date: July 26th


After eight instalments of the Fast and Furious, the universe gets its first spin-off in 2019 in the shape of Hobbs and Shaw.

The film follows Johnson's Luke Hobbs, the Diplomatic Security Service agent who has been a part of the franchise since 2011's Fast Five, and Statham's Deckard Shaw, the former villain who became a key part of the team in Fast 8.

Plot details are under wraps, but we do that the pair will be up against Idris Elba.

Elba will play the movie’s' villain, who is named Brixton. He is billed as an international terrorist and criminal mastermind.

Vanessa Kirby and Eddie Marsan also take key roles, while Deadpool 2 director David Leitch is behind the camera, working from a script from Chris Morgan, writer on six of the Fast and Furious movies.


The Rhythm Section

Starring: Blake Lively, Jude Law, Sterling K. Brown, Max Casella, Daniel Mays  

Director: Reed Morano

Release Date: February 22nd


Blake Lively leads the way in this action-packed spy thriller, which has been nurtured by 007 super producer Barbara Broccoli. 

Lively plays Stephanie Patrick, a woman who suffers a devastating loss when her family are killed in a plane crash, a crash on a flight she was also due to be on. 

Discovering, years later, that the crash was not an accident, she sets out to find the culprits...

There's no trailer for this, but Lively's husband Ryan Reynolds has shown off one photo of her in character. Deep, deep in character.

The Mule

Starring: Clint Eastwood, Bradley Cooper, Laurence Fishburne, Michael Peña, Dianne Wiest, Andy Garcia, Alison Eastwood 

Director: Clint Eastwood 

Release Date: January 25th


Clint Eastwood will be 89 in May, but he seems to have no interest in slowing down and returns again with a new starring and directing gig. 

The film is based on the true story of Leo Sharp, a World War II veteran in his 80s who became a drug dealer and courier for the Sinaloa Cartel.

Eastwood plays Earl Stone, a man in his 80s who is broke, alone, and facing foreclosure of his business when he is offered a job that simply requires him to drive.  Unbeknownst to him, he’s just signed on as a drug courier for a Mexican cartel. 

Bradley Cooper stars as Colin Bates, the DEA agent who is then assigned to catch Stone and bring him to justice. 

Starring alongside Eastwood and Cooper are Laurence Fishburne, Michael Peña, Dianne Wiest, Andy Garcia, Alison Eastwood and Taissa Farmiga.

Eastwood directs from a script from Nick Schenk, who he previously worked with on Gran Torino. 



17 Bridges

Starring: Chadwick Boseman, J. K. Simmons, Sienna Miller, Taylor Kitsch, Stephan James

Director: Brian Kirk

Release Date: August 29th


Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman commands a big-name cast in this tough action thriller. 

Boseman will play a disgraced NYPD detective, who, after being thrust into a citywide manhunt for a cop killer, is given a last shot at redemption...

Marvel supremos The Russo Brother turn producer on this one, which marks the big screen debut of Luther/Game Of Thrones director Brian Kirk. 

Cold Pursuit

Starring: Liam Neeson, Laura Dern, Julia Jones, Emmy Rossum, Tom Bateman, William Forsythe

Director: Hans Petter Moland

Release Date: February 22nd


Liam Neeson stars in this icy new action thriller. 

Neeson plays Nelson Coxman, a snow plougher who heads out for revenge against a drug cartel in his Rocky Mountains hometown after his son is murdered by the gang.

Laura Dern, Julia Jones, Emmy Rossum, Tom Bateman and William Forsythe star alongside Neeson.

The film is a remake of the 2014 Norwegian thriller In Order of Disappearance which starred Stellan Skarsgård and Game Of Thrones man Kristofer Hivju.

Norwegian director Hans Petter Moland, who directed the original, takes charge, working from a script from screenwriting newcomer Frank Baldwin.



Angel Has Fallen

Starring: Gerard Butler, Morgan Freeman, Danny Huston, Michael Landes, Tim Blake Nelson, Nick Nolte, Piper Perabo, Jada Pinkett Smith

Director: Ric Roman Waugh

Release Date: August 23rd


After Olympus and London both fell, we now return for a third helping of the hit action franchise. 

This time, Gerard Butler's Secret Service agent Mike Banning finds himself framed for an assassination attempt on the President.

Pursued by his own agency and the FBI, Banning faces a race to clear his name and uncover the real terrorist threat which has set its sights on Air Force One...

Miss Bala 

Starring: Gina Rodriguez, Ismael Cruz Córdova, Anthony Mackie

Director: Catherine Hardwicke

Release Date: March 15th


Gina Rodriguez, best known for her starring role in cutesy comedy Jane The Virgin, takes on a very different challenge in this hard-hitting thrill ride. 

The film is a remake of the Spanish-language movie of the same name, which came out in 2011. 

In the new version, Rodriguez stars as Gloria, a beauty contest winner is forced to work for a crime boss after she witnesses a murder. 


The Informer

Starring: Joel Kinnaman, Clive Owen, Rosamund Pike, Ana De Amas

Director: Andrea Di Stefano

Release Date: March 22nd


Joel Kinnaman heads back to prison in this brutal new action thriller. 

Kinnaman plays Pete Koslow, a reformed criminal and former special operations soldier, who finds himself working undercover for FBI handlers to infiltrate the Polish mob's drug trade in New York.

But, after a drug deal goes wrong, Koslow must return to the one place he's fought so hard to leave, Bale Hill Prison. Once inside, he faces a choice, complete a final job for the FBI and win his freedom, or stay there forever. 

Common and Blade Runner 2049's Ana De Amas co-star, working for Escobar: Paradise Lost director Andrea Di Stefano. The film is an adaptation of Swedish crime novel Three Seconds



The Hunt

Starring: TBC

Director: Craig Zobel

Release Date: September 27th


A mysterious one, this. Billed as a politically charged action thriller, the film sees Lost creator Damon Lindelof teaming up with horror hit factory Blumhouse. 

No cast details or plot whisperings have hit the news, but that will change in the early part of 2019. 



Starring: Kumail Nanjiani, Dave Bautista, Iko Uwais, Mira Sorvino

Director: Michael Dowse

Release Date: July 12th


We finish with a big-hearted action-comedy, lead by The Big Sick's Kumail Nanjiani. 

Nanjiani plays Stu, an Uber driver who picks up Vic, a grizzled detective who is hot on the trail of a terrorist.

Thrown together, Stu is forced to help Vic track down his man, all while trying to keep his Uber rating in pristine condition.
