22 Jump Street's Phil Lord and Christopher Miller to direct stand-alone Han Solo Star Wars movie
Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, best known for directing 21 Jump Street and The Lego Movie, have signed up to direct a new Star Wars spin-off based on the early years of Han Solo.
The pair will work from a script from The Empire Strikes Back writer Lawrence Kasdan and his son Jon Kasdan, which will explore the origins of Solo, the smuggler made famous in the original Star Wars trilogy by Harrison Ford.
Speaking about the announcement, Lord and Miller said: "This is the first film we've worked on that seems like a good idea to begin with. We promise to take risks, to give the audience a fresh experience, and we pledge ourselves to be faithful stewards of these characters who mean so much to us."
They continued: "This is a dream come true for us. And not the kind of dream where you're late for work and all your clothes are made of pudding, but the kind of dream where you get to make a film with some of the greatest characters ever, in a film franchise you've loved since before you can remember having dreams at all."
The movie, which is currently untitled, is due for release on May 25th in 2018. You can read the full announcement here.
Lord and Miller join Godzilla director Gareth Edwards in making a spin-off from Star Wars. Edwards is currently working on Rogue One, which sees Felicity Jones and a band of raiders trying to steal the Death Star.
The first new Star Wars movie Star Wars: The Force Awakens is due for release on December 18th in 2015. You can check out the full Star Wars back catalogue here in our online store.
