7 of the best graphic novels still to come in 2018
This weekend hmv launches Comic Week, a celebration of comics and comic book characters that will take place in our stores across the UK and offer you the chance to get your hands on some exclusive comics and other goodies, as well as giving you first look at some upcoming titles before they're available anywhere else!
With that in mind we set about examining some of the most exciting comic book and graphic novel releases still to arrive between now and the end of the year. Here are 7 of the best still to come in 2018...
V For Vendetta: 30th Anniversary Deluxe Edition
For any graphic novel enthusiast, Alan Moore needs no introduction and neither does his anarchist creation V, whose appearance has long since transcended the world of comic books and been adopted and popularised by the likes of 'hacktivist' groups such as Anonymous. Although V for Vendetta began its run in 1982, V's story didn't reach its published ending until 1988, making this year the 30th anniversary of V for Vendetta's conclusion.
To celebrate the occasion Vertigo Comics are set to issue a 30th Anniversary Deluxe Edition, putting V's story in a hardback cover for the firs time in years. Featuring a host of bonus material including an essay by Moore and sketches from illustrator David Lloyd, the hardback edition is due to make its arrival in stores on November 20th.
Aquaman: Throne Of Atlantis
The storyline featuring the battle between Aquaman and his brother King Orm, in which the latter wages war on the surface world, first appeared in Aquaman and Justice League comics in 2012 and loosely formed the basis for the 2015 animated film of the same name. This November the series is to be released as a trade paperback featuring the entire storyline for the first time.
Written by Geoff Johns and illustrated by Ivan Reis and Paul Pelletier, Aquaman: Throne of Atlantis collates the stories originally featured in Aquaman Vol. 7 and Justice League Vol. 2, and is set to arrive in stores on November 27th.
Harley Quinn: Volume 1
Harley Quinn's comic book story began anew this year with Sam Humphries and Christopher Sebela stepping behind the wheel and providing the storylines for Harley's new adventures, which emerged in June this year and ran through issues 43-49. The first volume of these new stories are collected in trade paperback form for the first time at the end of this month, with Harley Quinn: Volume 1 set to land on the shelves in stores on October 30th.
Batman Rebirth Vol. 7: The Wedding
DC's Batman Rebirth series has continued apace this year and even saw the caped crusader about to tie the knot with Catwoman – until of course things go sideways and the pair end up on a deadly assignment that sends them both hurtling through space and time.
Written by Tom King and illustrated Mikel Janin, the new story arc is collected in this new paperback featuring the seventh volume of Batman Rebirth stories, which is set to arrive in stores on October 30th.
Mera: Queen of Atlantis
Arthur Curry isn't the only big character in Atlantis and ahead of Amber Heard's turn as Mera in James Wan's upcoming Aquaman movie, due to hit cinema screens in December, Mera has been enjoying a run of her own this year, headlining her very own comic book series for the first time ever.
Those adventures are set to be featured in the collected edition Mera: Queen of Atlantis, which covers all six issues published so far and is set to arrive in stores ahead of Aquaman's release. Featuring a storyline written by Dan Abnett and illustrations by Norm Rapmund, Richard Friend and Lap Medina, Mera: Queen of Atlantis is set to arrive in stores on December 11th.
Justice League: Volume 1
Following on from the events featured in Dark Nights: Metal and Justice League: No Justice, the League's core members were reunited this year in a new series of adventures written by Scott Snyder and James T Tynion IV.
Featuring illustrations from the likes of Jorge Jimenez, Jim Cheung and Doug Mahnke, the new series launched in June this year and issues 1-6 are collated in this new paperback covering all of Volume 1, which is due to drop onto the shelves in stores on November 13th.
Immortal Men: Volume 1 (New Age Of Heroes)
At the beginning of the year there was plenty of hype surrounding DC's all-new line of comic books New Age of Heroes, which promised to introduce new characters and new storylines, offering a welcome change from the industry-wide focus on reviving and reframing legacy characters. Not all of the stories in the series have hit the mark with critics and fans, but there have been a few real gems in the mix, including the Immortal Men series, which features artwork from the likes of Jim Lee, Andy Kubert, John Romita Jr. and Ivan Reis.
How long the series continues for remains to be seen, but for now New Age of Heroes is still going strong and Volume 1 of Immortal Men is set to arrive in stores on December 4th.
