Who’s in it?
Rosamund Pike stars as Ruth Williams with David Oyelowo playing Seretse Karma. They are joined by Terry Pheto, Vusi Kunene, Abena Ayivor, Jack Davenport, Jack Lowden, Tom Felton, Nicholas Lyndhurst, Anastasia Hille and Laura Carmichael.
And who’s behind the camera?
The movie has been directed by Amma Asante, best known for hit costume drama Belle, she works from a script from Eye In The Sky writer Guy Hibbert.
What’s the plot?
The film tells the story of Seretse Khama, who would go on to become the King of Bechuanaland (modern Botswana), and Ruth Williams, the London office worker he married in 1948.
We meet Karma just after the Second World War as he studies in London and meets Ruth, an office worker from London. The two hit it off immediately and are soon married, but after there’s trouble in Karma’s homeland he is forced to head back to Bechuanaland and faces a battle to win over his people. Will they accept him and the woman he loves?
Does it deliver?
Absolutely. It’s a sweeping, tender and wonderfully acted movie bringing a great story to life.
