A Walk Among The Tombstones: What You Need To Know
Coming to DVD on Monday (January 19th), A Walk Among the Tombstones builds from author Lawrence Block's bestselling series of pulpy mystery novels. Given that director Scott Frank is best known for his screenplay work - see Minority Report, Out of Sight, Marley & Me, The Interpreter and the above-mentioned title - the story is in especially capable hands. That Frank is also a keen fan of the thriller genre is icing on the cake. Here’s everything you need to know.
Who's in it?
A resigned- and tired-looking but indefatigable Liam Neeson is the main man here. Presumably that’s enough, given Neeson’s Herculean work as an action star in recent years, one noted for his ability to elevate any material around him. There's also a minor role for one-time Downton Abbey star and action hero in waiting Dan Stevens.
What's the plot?
Neeson stars as Matt Scudder, a deeply damaged ex-NYPD cop who now works as an unlicensed private investigator operating just outside the law. When Scudder reluctantly agrees to help a heroin trafficker (England's Dan Stevens) hunt down the men who kidnapped and then brutally murdered his wife (we’re talking power tools here), the PI learns that this is not the first time these men have committed this sort of twisted crime, nor is it likely to be the last.
The impetus, naturally, is that Neeson’s Scudder operates “just outside the law” and thus is not beholden to the usual parameters of crime-stopping. Really, what fun would that be? What’s most interesting about this character is Scudder’s obvious aversion to violence, even though it forms the wallpaper of his world as a PI. You can almost feel him cringing as he gets ever nearer the bad guys and the inevitable mess of violence such an encounter will bring.
Does it deliver?
Absolutely. Critics lauded Neeson’s performance in this gritty crime thriller, noting his ability to help the film transcend its genre clichés and so do we. It's well worth investing in. Proceed accordingly.
A Walk Among the Tombstones is available in hmv stores across the UK from Monday (January 19th).
