Actor Omar Sharif dies aged 83
Omar Sharif, star of iconic movies like Lawrence Of Arabia and Doctor Zhivago, has died at the age of 83.
Sharif, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease earlier this year, passed away earlier this afternoon at a hopsital in Cairo after suffering a heart attack.
Born in Egypt in 1932 as Michel Demitri Chalhoub, he began acting in 1953 and appeared in over 20 Egyptian productions before landing the role of Sharif Ali in Lawrence Of Arabia, a role that earned him an Oscar nomination.
After this he would go to have a long and distinguished career in Hollywood with key roles in movies like Doctor Zhivago, Funny Girl and The Last Valley. His last performance came in 2013 in French-Moroccan drama Rock The Casbah.
As well as his acting career, Sharif also had a degree in mathematics and physics from Cairo University and was, at one time, one of the top 10 bridge players in the world.
