American Hustle: What You Need To Know
After his gritty look at amateur boxing in The Fighter and his light-hearted take on a man's struggle with mental illness in the much acclaimed Silver Linings Playbook, director David O'Russell decided last year to have a go at putting together a good old fashioned caper with his thriller American Hustle. The film is released on DVD and Blu-Ray on Monday (April 27th), here's what you need to know about it…
What’s the plot?
To say too much would be to give too much away, but the basic plot summary is this: We're in 1978 on the East Coast of the US. Irving Rosenfeld is a brilliant conman who partners up with partner and lover Sydney Prosser for a series of low-key scams. Caught red-handed by wild FBI agent Richie DiMaso, the pair are forced to work undercover for him as they attempt to trap Carmine Polito, a volatile New Jersey political operator.
Who’s in it?
Christian Bale stars as the be-comb-overed Irving, with Amy Adams playing Sydney, his partner in crime and much more. O'Russell also reunites his Silver Linings Playbook leading duo of Bradley Cooper, who plays DiMaso, and Jennifer Lawrence, who lights up the screen as Irving's unpredictable wife Rosalyn. Jeremy Renner quiffs up to play Polito, while there are also notable appearances from Louis C.K., Jack Huston and Michael Peña.
Does it deliver?
It's slick, it's watchable and some of the performances, in particular Bale and Lawrence, are absolutely superb. The plot twists and turns nicely and will keep you guessing right up to the end, which, as with many thrillers, may come as a bit of a let down. It's worth watching to find out though…
