Andrew Garfield and Mel Gibson set to team up for new World War II drama
The Amazing Spider-Man star Andrew Garfield looks set to team up with veteran actor Mel Gibson for a brand new World War II drama.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Gibson is set to direct Hacksaw Ridge, the true story of war hero Private First Class Desmond T. Doss, with Garfield in talks to take the role of Doss.
Doss was a unique story, drafted in 1942, he refused to kill or carry a weapon on religious grounds, a move which naturally made him very unpopular with his fellow soldiers. However, Doss made himself a legend when he saved 75 men during the Battle of Okinawa.
He won two Bronze Stars, three Purple Hearts and he Congressional Medal of Honour for his service, which saw him wounded by a grenade and be hit by a sniper.
Hacksaw Ridge would mark Gibson's first directorial venture in almost a decade as he last directed the much-loved Apocalypto back in 2006.
Garfield will next be seen on screen alongside Michael Shannon and Laura Dern in gritty new drama 99 Homes.
