Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman star in the stirring first trailer for new drama The Father

A first trailer for The Father, the new drama starring Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman, has debuted online. Click below to watch it:

Starring alongside Hopkins and Colman are Mark Gatiss, Imogen Poots, Rufus Sewell and Olivia Williams.

Hopkins plays Anthony, a mischievous and highly independent man who, as he ages, refuses all assistance from his daughter, Colman's Anne.

As time wears on, such help has become essential following Anne's decision to move to Paris with her partner.

Now in new surroundings, Anthony tries to make sense of his changing circumstances, but he begins to doubt his loved ones, his own mind and even the fabric of his reality.

The Father began its life on the stage and premiered in September 2012 at the Théâtre Hébertot, Paris, with Robert Hirsch and Isabelle Gélinas starring.

In 2015, it was turned into a French language film, Floride, which starred Jean Rochefort and Sandrine Kiberlain.

Florian Zeller, writer of Le Père, the play upon which the film is based, directs.

He has adapted his own work alongside Christopher Hampton, who provided the original translation for the play and helped bring Atonement to the big screen.

The Father will be released into UK cinemas on January 8th in 2021.
