Aquaman - Five Reasons You'll Love It

We've been to Krypton to meet Henry Cavill's Superman, to Gotham to meet Ben Affleck's new take on Batman, to Themyscira to meet Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman and now we're going underwater for a long-overdue meeting with Jason Momoa's Aquaman.

Momoa, who made his debut in Justice League, takes the title role, while Amber Heard, Willem Dafoe, Patrick Wilson, Dolph Lundgren, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and Nicole Kidman are in supporting roles.

This movie is an origin story for Momoa's Arthur Curry, absent heir to the underwater kingdom of Atlantis. In this story, he must step forward to lead his people after his half-brother Orm decides is set on invading the surface.

But, before he can do that, he has to prove his worth, to his people, his friends, and most importantly, himself...

James Wan, the director behind horror franchises Saw and The Conjuring, is in charge of this one, which has a budget nearing $200 million.

The film arrives on DVD shelves on Monday (April 8th). But, before that, we caught an early screening of the film and have rounded up five reasons why you'll love it...

It's so much fun...

The DC universe has so far been marked out by its dark tone and brooding characters, but Aquaman is the polar opposite of that. The world is bright, the characters are playful, the music is upbeat and the jokes are plentiful. It's a whole lot of fun...

The effects are incredible...

James Wan and his team have clearly had a lot of fun coming up with the look and feel of this film. There's so much to take in, the undersea creatures, the sea monsters, the guards, the weapons, the cities, there are so many breathtaking shots.

Jason Momoa commands the movie superbly...

Momoa's Arthur Curry is every inch the reluctant hero. He's snarky, brash and absolutely brutal in the movie's many, many fight scenes.

Patrick Wilson is an excellent foe...

Wilson's King Orm is a scheming and charismatic villain, a smooth talker, he's an excellent counterpoint to Momoa's brash, straightforward hero.

There's a world built for plenty more...

Talk has already begun of a sequel and, at the end of this movie, there's plenty of rope left for more adventures. Wan has done the heavy lifting and built a colourful and vibrant world which deserves many more visits.

Aquaman is out now in hmv stores.
