Bill & Ted Face The Music - Five Reasons You'll Love It

When budding writers Ed Solomon and Chris Matheson completed a screenplay, based on a comedy stand-up routine they had performed while in college, of two slacker best friends who are catapulted on a magical adventure, it was unlikely much would come from it.

As it turned out, Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, despite a tiny budget and a cast lead by then unknowns Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter, was a massive hit and achieved such cult status.

It followed Reeves and Winter's Ted 'Theodore' Logan and Bill S. Preston, esq., two time-travelling teenagers who discovered that, at some point in the future, their band Wyld Stallyns would be responsible for writing 'the greatest song ever written' – a tune so powerful that nothing less than the future of civilisation depended on it.

First, in Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, the pair travelled through time to assemble historical figures for their high school history presentation, then in the sequel, 1991's Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey, the pair were forced to battle a tyrant from the future who created evil android doubles of Bill and Ted.

Two films, over $100 million in box office receipts, and that was supposed to be that. But the films gained a cult following and people kept asking Reeves and Winter as they went on with their careers, if they would come back and play the pair again.

Eventually, in 2010, Solomon and Matheson began to work in earnest on the story, which has taken another decade to finally make it to the big screen.

But here it is. The pair are back, leading a new cast, and facing a new enemy. Middle age.

In this new outing, Bill and Ted are tackling all the responsibilities that being a middle-aged dad brings, but still to write that elusive hit that will not only secure their fame and glory, but also the fate of the world as they know it...and time is running out.

In the cast alongside Reeves and Winter are Samara Weaving, William Sadler and Kristen Schaal.

Dean Parisot directs, while the original film's creators Matheson and Solomon provide the script.

With the film in cinemas now and is available to pre-order here on DVD, Blu-Ray and 4K here in hmv's online store, including an exclusive Blu-Ray collection, but we caught an early screening of the film and have rounded up five reasons why you'll love it...

It's such good fun...

In interviews over the years, Reeves and Winter always expressed surprise at the fact that this teeny slacker series had enjoyed such a long life. And it's that spirit which is carried into the new movie. It riffs cleverly on the pair's age and the troubles of perpetual adolescence, but always with a very, very light touch.

And very, very funny...

Regardless of your affection for the original movies, this movie is full of big laughs, both slapstick moments and some excellent one-liners.

There are some great cameos...

Jillian Bell, Kid Cudi, Dave Grohl and Arcade Fire frontman Win Butler all pop up at one point or another for brief, but very funny cameos.

The new cast additions almost steal the show...

Ready or Not's Samara Weaving and Atypical star Brigette Lundy-Paine play Theadora "Thea" Preston and Wilhelmina "Billie" Logan, the daughters of Bill and Ted. As their Dads head out on a quest to find the song that will save humanity, their daughters set about assembling the best band in history, with hilarious consequences...

It's got a great soundtrack...

Weezer, Cold War Kids, Mastodon and Lamb of God are all on hand to contribute to a soundtrack worthy of the original movies.
