Boy Erased - What You Need To Know
Garrad Conley’s memoir, which recounted his childhood in a fundamentalist Arkansas family that enrolled him in gay conversion therapy, was a heartbreaking bestseller in 2016. Now it arrives on DVD shelves with an all-star cast and a heap of critical acclaim.
Here is what you need to know about it...
Who’s in it?
Lucas Hedges stars as Jared Eamons (a renaming of Conley), with Russell Crowe and Nicole Kidman playing his parents. Red Hot Chilli Peppers' Flea, Xavier Dolan, pop star Troye Sivan, Joe Alwyn and Joel Edgerton co-star.
And who’s directing?
Edgerton steps behind the camera for this one. It is his second film after hit horror The Gift. Edgerton has also provided the script, adapting Conley’s memoir for the screen.
What’s the plot?
We meet Eamons on his first day at conversion therapy, having been sent there by his parents. As he listens to the lectures, he reminiscences about how he got there, the experiences that have taken him there and the role of his parents in sending him away from his home and into the course.
Does it deliver?
This is not an easy watch, but it’s not easy subject matter. The performances, particularly Hedges and Kidman’s, are terrific, and Edgerton directs superbly. Well worth a watch, as long as you’re prepared to be moved and made profoundly uncomfortable.
Boy Erased is released into hmv stores on Monday (June 17th).
