Bradley Walsh reported to be next Doctor Who companion
Bradley Walsh, best known as host of ITV's hit quiz show The Chase, is set to be the new Doctor Who companion, according to reports overnight.
The Daily Mirror reports that Walsh, who is currently recording his second album of swing covers, will star alongside the newly cast Jodie Whittaker in the next season of Doctor Who.
A source told the paper: "Bradley is super excited to be joining the cast of Doctor Who in such a key role. It means that his schedule over the coming months will be jam-packed – so he won’t be able to continue with the full range of programmes he currently makes for ITV."
They continued: "But, crucially, it won’t affect his role as presenter of The Chase. He loves that show with a passion and so does the audience, so he’s delighted to have found a way to make it all work."
Whittaker will be become the first female Doctor Who and will begin her spell in the role next year.
She takes over from Peter Capaldi, who was the 12th actor to occupy the role after taking over from Matt Smith in 2013 and will complete his spell on the show next Christmas when his final episode is broadcast.
Speaking about the casting, Whittaker said: "I’m beyond excited to begin this epic journey with Chris and with every Whovian on this planet. It’s more than an honour to play the Doctor. It means remembering everyone I used to be while stepping forward to embrace everything the Doctor stands for: hope. I can’t wait."
Chris Chibnall, who is taking over as head writer of the show from Steven Moffat, added: "After months of lists, conversations, auditions, recalls, and a lot of secret-keeping, we’re excited to welcome Jodie Whittaker as the Thirteenth Doctor. I always knew I wanted the Thirteenth Doctor to be a woman and we're thrilled to have secured our number one choice. Her audition for The Doctor simply blew us all away. Jodie is an in-demand, funny, inspiring, super-smart force of nature and will bring loads of wit, strength and warmth to the role. The Thirteenth Doctor is on her way.”
Peter Capaldi added: “Anyone who has seen Jodie Whittaker’s work will know that she is a wonderful actress of great individuality and charm. She has above all the huge heart to play this most special part. She’s going to be a fantastic Doctor.”
