Bumblebee - Five Reasons You'll Love It

Since its debut back in 2007, the big-screen adaptations of Transformers have been a roaring success. Over the course of five movies, they have taken almost eight billion dollars at the box office, so naturally, a spin-off was always on the cards and it arrives in cinemas this week.

In charge of the spin-off is Travis Knight, the director who made his name with animated hit Kubo And The Two Strings.

He works from a script from Christina Hodson, who is currently writing Harley Quinn spin-off Birds Of Prey, and has Lorenzo Di Bonaventura and Michael Bay acting as producers.

Hailee Steinfeld, John Cena, Jorge Lendeborg Jr., Jason Drucker, Kenneth Choi and Rachel Crow all star, with the action shifting to before the events of the first Transformers film.

Set in 1987, the film begins with young Transformer Bumblebee taking refuge in a small California beach town junkyard.

Discovered by an 18-year-old named Charlie Watson, who is struggling to fit in at school and at home as well as grieving over the loss of her father, the two strike up an unlikely friendship.

That, is just as well, because they'll need each other to survive what's coming their way...

The film hits DVD shelves in the coming days and arrives in hmv stores on Monday (May 13th).

But, before that, we caught an early screening and have rounded up five reasons why you'll love it...

It's a lot of fun...

As the Transformers franchise has progressed, the tone has gotten darker and darker, but that all goes out the window with Bumblebee. This is light, breezy and doesn't take itself too seriously...

John Cena steals the show...

The WWE man mountain plays Jack Burns, an agent for Sector 7, a secret government agency that monitors extraterrestrial activity on Earth. He's the film's light relief, bringing the same deadpan humour that lit up hit comedy Blockers to this role.

But there are some big-action set pieces...

Bumblebee might break with a lot of Transformers' conventions, but the epic action is still very much part of the world. There are some huge robotic punch-ups for us to enjoy.

It's got a great soundtrack...

Duran Duran, Steve Winwood, A-Ha and a lot of The Smiths, Knight and his team have had a lot of fun putting the film's music together.

Things are set up nicely for next time...

There are many other Transformers spin-offs in the works, and, if they're all like this, bring it on.

Bumblebee is released into hmv stores on Monday (May 13th).
