Captain Phillips: What You Need To Know
Captain Phillips, the Hollywood retelling of the first hijacking of an American cargo ship in over 200 years, comes to DVD and Blu-Ray on Monday (February 10). Here's what you need to know about the film…
What’s the background?
Directed by Paul Greengrass, the celebrated director behind the likes of United 93, Bloody Sunday and both The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Identity, Captain Phillips was lauded by critics (93% approval on Rotten Tomatoes no less) and performed very well at the box office, taking well over $215 million. It has also scored six Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor.
What’s the plot?
The film is a retelling of the true story of Captain Richard Phillips, Captain of the MV Maersk Alabama, which became the first American cargo ship to be hijacked in 200 years in 2009 when it was taken over by Somali pirates.
Who’s in it?
Tom Hanks stars as the aforementioned Captain Phillips, with Catherine Keener playing his wife Andrea, Hanks delivers a great performance, but the show is really stolen by Barkhad Abdi, who plays Abduwali Muse, the leader of the hijackers. He's justifiably up for an Oscar.
Does it deliver?
Absolutely. The film is triumph, gripping and stomach lurching from beginning to end. An essential watch.
