Carol's Rooney Mara set to lead new Mary Magdalene biopic
Rooney Mara, best known for her starring roles in Carol and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, is in talks to star in a new biopic of Mary Magdalene.
The movie will be directed by Garth Davis, who has recently wrapped on much-tipped drama Lion and who previously directed four episodes of hit drama Top Of The Lake. It has a script from Helen Edmundson and Philippa Goslett.
According to Screen International, it's not known how the biopic will treat Magdalene, who has been portrayed as a prostitute in some adaptations and simply as a devoted follower of Christ in others.
Speaking about Mara's casting, director Davis said: "Rooney’s raw, brave approach to performances, coupled with her deeply magnetic inner life, holds all the dimensions needed to bring to life one of history’s most misunderstood women - Mary Magdalene. Having worked with Rooney on Lion, I know she is a once in a life time talent."
Carol, which is nominated for a number of Oscars, is available to pre-order on the right-hand side of the page.
