Chiwetel Ejiofor set to play Baron Mordo in Marvel's Doctor Strange
12 Years A Slave star Chiwetel Ejiofor is in talks to take the key role of villain Baron Mordo in Marvel's new blockbuster Doctor Strange, which is to star Benedict Cumberbatch.
According to Deadline, Ejiofor hasn't formally signed up for the role yet, but is in advanced talks to take the part of Mordo. The report also states that the character will be an amalgamation of several characters from the Doctor Strange comic books rather than a straight adaptation.
In Doctor Strange, the titular hero is a cocky former neurosurgeon, who loses the use of his hands, and, in a last ditch attempt to regain his former powers, discovers magic. His mentor on this quest is a Tibetan mystic known as the Ancient One, who is training pupils to be the next sorcerer supreme.
Both Strange and Mordo are pupils of the Ancient One, but Mordo falls out of favour with the mystic and eventually seeks revenge by trying to kill his teacher.
In the comic books, the role of the Ancient One has been played by a male character, but it looks like Oscar winning actress Tilda Swinton will take the role and make it a female character.
Scott Derrickson, best known for directing The Exorcism Of Emily Rose, Sinister and last year's Deliver Us From Evil, has signed up to direct Doctor Strange. Jon Spaihts has written the script.
The film is currently scheduled to be released in November of 2016.
