David Yates reveals Johnny Depp's role in Fantastic Beasts sequel
Director David Yates has revealed which role Johnny Depp will be playing in the sequel to Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them, the new spin-off from Harry Potter, scripted by J. K. Rowling.
The sequel will film in early 2017 with newly confirmed star Depp joining up as soon as he completes work on a new version of Agatha Christie's Murder On The Orient Express. He is expected to have a small cameo in the first movie, which hits cinemas later this month.
In the sequel Depp will play Gellert Grindelwald, a wizard who was once the best friend of Albus Dumbledore before he turned to the dark side of magic. His dark turn and epic fall out with Dumbledore resulted in the death of Dumbledore's sister Ariana. Depp becomes the third actor to play the role after Jamie Campbell-Bower and Michael Byrne who both played the role in the Harry Potter movies.
Speaking about Depp's casting, Yates told fansite The Leaky Cauldron: "The whole principal of casting the movie was go with the best actor. Go for the most inspired, interesting, right fit for that character. And as we approached Grindelwald we thought, ‘Who’s going to take this in an interesting direction?’ In this business, it’s a weird old business. You’re brilliant one week, people are saying odd things the next, you go up and down. But no one takes away your pure talent."
He continued: "Johnny Depp is a real artist. He’s created several characters who have really resonated in our popular culture. He’s a really brilliant, brilliant actor. We were excited about seeing what he would do with this guy, the character. He’s fearless; he’s imaginative; he’s ambitious. We thought he would do something fun and special. So we went for him, purely on that selfish basis. We don’t care if he’s famous or not famous. We just know he’s interesting."
Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them is set 70 years before the events of Harry Potter and follows the adventures of Eddie Redmayne's Newt Scamander, a wizard at the heart New York's secret magic community, who arrives for a meeting with a briefcase full of magical creatures, some of whom end up escaping.
The movie stars, Redmayne, Ezra Miller, Katherine Waterson, Colin Farrell, Alison Sudol and Dan Fogler. The movie has been directed by David Yates, who was behind the camera on four of the eight Harry Potter films, and is the start of a trilogy of movies.
J.K. Rowling revealed earlier this summer that she is planning a total of five movies in the Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them series.
Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them will be released into cinemas on November 18th next year. The sequel is scheduled to hit cinemas on November 16th in 2018.
