Divergent finale Ascendant moved to TV
The final instalment of the Divergent series looks like it will not make it to the big screen.
Ascendant, which had been due for release in 2017, is now planned to instead be a TV movie that leads into a new spin-off series.
According to Variety, production on Ascendant had been due to begin this summer, but after the poor performance of previous instalment Allegiant at the box office, producers have changed their minds.
Now the idea is to finalise the storylines involving the current cast and to introduce a new cast, who would then continue the series on either a traditional or streaming network.
Negotiations with any of the present cast, who are all signed up with movie deals for the final instalment, and any new cast, have not begun yet.
The movies are based on Veronica Roth’s bestselling series of novels and are set in a future where society is divided into five distinct factions based on personality traits.
Unfortunately for Beatrice 'Tris' Prior, when she undergoes a test to determine which faction she belongs to, she finds out she meets the criteria for more than one and is therefore Divergent - a rare occurrence which puts her and others like her in danger, especially as she soon discovers there’s a plot to rid the world of Divergents all together.
Allegiant was released on DVD earlier this month. You can check all three previous instalments by clicking on the icon on the right-hand side of the page.
