Ed Skrein to play villain in Maleficent sequel

Deadpool star Ed Skrein will play the villain in the sequel to Maleficent

The sequel, which will see Angelina Jolie and Elle Fanning return to star, will enter production later this year. The exact part Skrein will play has yet to be revealed.

Maleficent, which took over $750 million at the box office upon release in 2014, is a live-action fantasy prequel to the 1959 Disney animation based on the classic fairytale.

Jolie played the title character, an evil fairy who cursed an infant princess to eternal sleep, only then to realise the young girl was the only one who could save the kingdom from its dangerous ruler.

For the sequel, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales' Joachim Ronning will direct, with Jez Butterworth and original writer Linda Woolverton working on the script.
