Edge Of Tomorrow: What You Need To Know
Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt’s new science fiction epic Edge Of Tomorrow, or Live. Die. Repeat: Edge Of Tomorrow, depending on how you look at the packaging, is released on DVD and Blu-Ray on Monday (October 13th), here is everything you need to know about it.
Who’s in it?
This is basically a two-hander between Tom Cruise, who plays Major William Cage, and Emily Blunt, who portrays super soldier Rita Vrataski. There’s a good supporting cast, including a gruff Brendan Gleeson, a stoic Bill Paxton and a studious Noah Taylor, but this is all about Cruise and Blunt.
What’s the plot?
So, here goes, we’re in the near future and earth is under attack from an alien race known as mimics. We follow Major William Cage, a PR man who has no combat experience, who is suddenly deployed into a combat mission against the aliens.
Despite being killed in a matter of minutes, Cage suddenly finds himself starting over in a time loop, repeating the same mission and being killed. He brings this to the attention of Rita Vrataski, a super soldier, a poster girl for the war, who tells Cage that she’s had the same experience, and off we go…
Does it deliver?
The problem with this film (and this perhaps explains its lukewarm performance at the box office, particularly in the US) is when you try and explain it quickly, it sounds very dull. To your casual film goer, who’s just looking for a bit of entertainment on a Sunday afternoon, a film where the tagline is basically Groundhog Day meets War Of The Worlds isn’t the easiest sell. The idea that it’s same day over and over again is a particularly hard thing to market.
The thing is though, the concept actually works remarkably well and the fear that you’ll be bored and watching the same scenes over and over again is quickly dispatched.
This is a stunning, whipsmart and actually quite sophisticated sci-fi adventure. It’s fun, it’s chaotic and very exciting. Highly recommended.
Edge Of Tomorrow is released on DVD and Blu-Ray on Monday (October 13th). There is also an exclusive steelbook version of the movie, available to purchase only at hmv. You can find more details about that here.
