Elizabeth Banks to play Rita Repulsa in Power Rangers reboot
The Hunger Games and Pitch Perfect star Elizabeth Banks has signed up to play the villain in the new big-budget Hollywood reboot of Power Rangers.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Banks will star as Rita Repulsa, an alien witch who has ambitions to take over the earth and sends monster after monster to take out the power rangers.
Power Rangers was originally a children's TV show in the 1990s and was initially called The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, it became a huge hit, selling millions of dollars worth of merchandise and spawning two Hollywood spin-offs Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie and Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie.
It centred around a group of teenagers who were chosen to protect the world from alien invaders and were given the ability to morph into super-powered warriors and to pilot giant robots called Zords.
Newcomers RJ Cyler, Becky G, Ludi Lin, Naomi Scott and Dacre Montgomery are signed up to play the rangers, while Dean Israelite, the man behind the camera on hit time-travel teen thriller Project Almanac, will direct the movie.
The reboot, which is being developed by Lionsgate, will be executive-produced by Transformers and Star Trek Robert Orci.
