Ender's Game star Asa Butterfield in talks to be the new Spider-Man

Asa Butterfield, star of Ender's Game and Hugo, is in talks to be the new Spider-Man, according to reports.

Butterfield, who is only 18 years old, is apparently one of five actors that studios Marvel and Sony are looking at, but is the early favourite for the role, according to Deadline.

Andrew Garfield played Spider-Man twice, in 2012's The Amazing Spider-Man and 2014's The Amazing Spider-Man 2, he took over the role from Tobey Maguire, who held the roles for three films between 2002 and 2007. Both of those actors were in their late 20s when they took the role, but it's strongly rumoured that both studios want someone much younger for the character this time round.

Garfield's departure from the roles came after the announcement earlier this year that the web slinger would be joining the Marvel cinmetic universe and a brand new star and director were being sought.

50/50’s Jonathan Levine, St Vincent’s Ted Melfi, Pitch Perfect’s Jason Moore and Napoleon Dynamite’s Jared Hess have all been linked with the director's chair, while previous reports suggested that both The Maze Runner star Dylan O'Brien and Fury's Logan Lerman were being considered to play Spider-Man.
