Ewan McGregor to play Black Mask in Birds of Prey
Cathy Yan's upcoming Harley Quinn movie Birds of Prey has added Ewan McGregor to its steadily expanding cast, with the Star Wars and Trainspotting star set to take on the role of Batman villain Black Mask.
First appearing in a Batman comic book storyline created by Doug Moench and Tom Mandrake in the mid-1980s, Black Mask is the villainous alias of Roman Sionis, the scion of a wealthy family who murders his own parents in a bid to take control of the family business, only to see it collapse under his stewardship – a failure he blames squarely on competition from Wayne Enterprises.
Exactly how the character will feature in the plot of Yan's film remains unclear at this stage, with the details of the movie's storyline being kept under wraps, but it is understood that Black Mask is set to be the film's primary antagonist and he is expected to face off against Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn, Mary Elizabeth Winstead's Huntress and Jurnee Smollett-Bell's Black Canary, all of whom are already confirmed attachments to Yan's film. The other cast member confirmed so far is Rosie Perez, who is set to tackle the role of Gotham City detective Renee Montoya.
Yan's film, which is likely to be R-rated, is set to begin shooting early next year, and while there's no confirmed UK release date as yet the film is slated for release in US cinemas on February 7th 2020.
