Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them - Five Reasons You’ll Love It

It’s been five years since Harry Potter made his last big screen appearance with the second part of the Deathly Hallows, five years that has seen author J. K. Rowling try her hand and excel at both detective fiction and gritty thrillers as well as assisting with a play that caps off the Harry Potter story. But ultimately, she couldn’t stay away from the wizarding world for long.

In September of 2013 it was announced that she’d written Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them, a script based on her 2001 book that brought together all the magical creatures in the Harry Potter universe, and the excitement that millions of Potter fans thought they’d never feel again was suddenly brought back to life.

The movie is set 70 years before the events of Harry Potter and follows the adventures of Eddie Redmayne's Newt Scamander, a wizard at the heart New York's secret magic community, who arrives for a meeting with a briefcase full of magical creatures, some of whom end up escaping, creating a big problem for the Big Apple’s deeply divided wizarding community.

The movie stars Redmayne, Ezra Miller, Katherine Waterston, Colin Farrell, Alison Sudol and Dan Fogler. The movie has been directed by David Yates, who was behind the camera on four of the eight Harry Potter films, and is the start of a series of five movies.

It hits cinemas tomorrow (November 18) and will be released on DVD in the spring of 2017, including a Blu-Ray Steelbook that will be available exclusively with hmv (you can pre-order it now on the right-hand side of the page)…

The beasts are incredible…

Rowling’s huge imagination is what makes Potter so wonderful and all-consuming and it’s on show once again here with the beasts. Whether it’s the adorable talking plants or the enormous amorous rhino, you’ll be blown away by the beasts.

It’s very, very funny…

While there’s as much gloom and jeopardy as there are in the early Potter movies with the wizarding community in something of a crisis, there’s also much light here amongst the shade. Whether it’s blasts of slapstick humour or some very witty one-liners, you’ll be chuckling constantly during this movie.

You’re going to fall in love with Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander…

Newt Scamander doesn’t have much in common with Harry Potter, he’s shuffling, awkward and you get the feeling he’d much rather spend his time talking to his fantastic beasts than have a conversation with anybody else, but he’s just as loveable and you find yourself rooting for him in no time. We can’t wait to see him develop over the movies to come.

The support cast excel too…

Whether it’s Katherine Waterston’s no-nonsense Tina Goldstein, her flirty sister Queenie, who is brought to life wonderfully by Alison Sudol, Dan Fogler, the stern, constantly overwhelmed Jacob, Colin Farrell’s dastardly Percival Graves, Ezra Miller’s browbeaten Credence Barebone or, most impressively, Samantha Morton’s terrifying Mary Lou Barebone, this is a brilliant cast movie. Redmayne will get most of the plaudits as he’s the star of the show, but his job is made a lot easier by a great cast.

Things are set up perfectly for the sequel…

We already knew that Johnny Depp would be playing Gellert Grindelwald, a wizard who was once the best friend of Albus Dumbledore before he turned to the dark side of magic, but we get a good look at him at the end of the movie and can’t wait to see him and Scamander do battle in the movies to come.

Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them is released into UK cinemas on Friday (November 18th).

The movie will be released on DVD in the spring of 2017 and is available to pre-order on DVD, Blu-Ray and a Blu-Ray Steelbook, exclusive to hmv, here.
