First image of Tom Hanks as Mister Rogers unveiled
When it was announced at the beginning of this year that Sony's TriStar Pictures had acquired the rights to a biopic about the life of beloved children's TV host Fred Rogers, Tom Hanks always seemed like a natural fit for the starring role, but now we get to see what Hanks will actually look like as Mister Rogers on the big screen.
Sony have unveiled the first image of Hanks in his role as Fred Rogers (see above) – and it's hard to imagine how the creator and host of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood could have been played by anyone else.
You Are My Friend is based on a screenplay written by Micah Fitzerman-Blue and Noah Harpster, the pair responsible for comedy series Transparent and who have recently provided the script for upcoming Disney sequel Maleficent 2.
The story uses as its focal point the relationship between Rogers and journalist Tom Junod, and details Rogers' efforts in creating and helming his popular preschool TV series, which enjoyed an incredible run on U.S. television from 1968 until 2001.
Speaking to Variety when the film was announced earlier this year, producers Marc Turtletaub and Peter Saraf said: “Now more than ever, we all need a re-introduction to Fred Rogers' message of uncompromising love and kindness between all living things.”
You Are My Friend is set to open in cinemas in the U.S. on October 18th 2019 and will debut in UK cinemas a couple of weeks later on November 1st.
