First Man - Five Reasons You'll Love It

After scooping six Oscars and a nomination for Best Actor in the process, it's no wonder that Ryan Gosling was happy to re-team with La La Land director Damien Chazelle.

But, for their new collaboration, they're looking up and bringing to life the story of the world's most famous spaceman.

Gosling stars as Neil Armstrong, with Claire Foy playing his wife Janet. The film follows Armstrong in the years leading up to the Apollo 11 mission in 1969, the mission that led to him becoming the first man to walk on the moon.

Pablo Schreiber, Kyle Chandler, Ciarán Hinds, Jason Clarke, Corey Stoll, Patrick Fugit and Lukas Haas are among Gosling and Foy's co-stars.

Chazelle is in charge, working from a script from Spotlight/The Post writer Josh Singer.

The film arrives on DVD shelves on Monday (February 18th). But, back before it hit cinemas, we caught an early screening of the film and have gathered together five reasons why you'll love it...

There are plenty of thrills...

At just under two hours and 20 minutes, First Man isn't a pacy thriller, but it does come with plenty of thrills. The opening sequence, in particular, is pure heart-in-mouth action and there are plenty more of those sequences throughout the runtime...

Ryan Gosling is perfect casting...

Armstrong is described as introverted, quiet and diligent by those who know him best and Gosling is the perfect choice to bring that to life. He delivers an elegant and thoughtful performance that should put him right in contention for awards season.

The supporting cast are on great form too...

On the surface, this might look like Gosling's vehicle, but there are plenty of meaty roles for the supporting cast too. Claire Foy delivers a great performance as Armstrong's wife Janet, Corey Stroll is excellent as the awkward and blunt Buzz Aldrin and Jason Clarke is on top form as Armstrong's friend and fellow astronaut Ed White.

The period detail is incredible...

The look of the clothes, the cars, the outfits, and, in particular, the spacecraft, is quite something. There's so much rich detail to take in.

The lunar sequences are beautiful...

A lot of the drama of this movie is grounded in the astronauts' lives, but when it does, quite literally, take flight, it does so beautifully. The sequences up in space are incredible with stunning cinematography and perfect sound design.

First Man is released on Monday (February 18th).
