First trailer and title unveiled for Star Wars: Episode IX
There was exciting news to open the weekend for Star Wars fans as the first trailer for Episode IX, which is due to arrive in cinemas at the end of this year, made its debut online – click below to watch it:
Alongside the new trailer came the the official title for the third and final instalment in the new Star Wars trilogy, which will now go by the name Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker.
The trailer revealed very little about what we can expect in terms of the plot of the latest instalment, but amongst the key talking points following the trailer's release was the strong hint that an old villain could make some of sort of return in Episode IX.
At the end of the trailer, the distinctive laughter of Emperor Palpatine – otherwise known as the Sith lord Darth Sidious – can be clearly heard, raising the prospect of an unlikely return for the vanquished Emperor, who was last seen disappearing down a reactor shaft at the hands of his protégé Darth Vader.
Exactly how Palpatine's return might play out remains to be seen, but there are a couple of possibilities – one being that the Emperor could take the form of a 'force ghost' as seen previously in the series, the other being the fact that Darth Sidious has previously claimed to have learned mastery over life and death from his mentor, Darth Plagueis.
No doubt there will be plenty more hints dropped between now and the end of the year, but for the rest we'll have to wait until Episode IX arrives in cinemas on December 19th.
