Gemini Man - Five Reasons You'll Love It

Even if everything goes exactly to plan, the development of any movie takes a long, long time. If all goes well, it’s usually a minimum of a year from idea to cameras rolling. But, sometimes, it takes a lot longer than that, years can go by. Or, in the case of Gemini Man, more than two decades.

The idea has remained constant. The film follows Henry Brogen, an ageing assassin seeking to retire and slip off to a quiet life. But his last job goes wrong, and to clean up, his employers send a younger clone of himself who can predict his every move.

Development on this blockbuster began in 1997, with writer Darren Lemke selling the idea to Sony Pictures. In the years in between, it has been through three studios, eight screenwriters, including big names like Brian Helgeland and Andrew Niccol, and countless directors. Then there are the stars who’ve been attached.

At the last count, they are: Harrison Ford, Chris O'Donnell, Mel Gibson, Jon Voight, Nicolas Cage, Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, Clint Eastwood, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, and Sean Connery.

Reasons for the endless delay seem to vary between the endless stream of departures and ambition that technology couldn’t quite match. But finally, in 2016, things began to stick. Paramount Pictures decided they would finally give it the greenlight, Will Smith came on to star and award-winning director Ang Lee agreed to direct. Finally, the thing was moving. Now it’s in cinemas.

Smith takes the role of Brogan, with Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Benedict Wong, Clive Owen and Linda Emond in supporting roles.

Lee directs, working from a script that is now credited to Game Of Thrones key man David Benioff as well as Billy Ray and Darren Lemke.

Gemini Man is in cinemas now and will be released on DVD later this year, but we caught an early screening and rounded up five reasons why you’ll love it...

It’s action-packed…

From the word go, this is a lively and explosive journey, with action setpieces, car chases and shootouts constantly coming at you.

With a spooky highlight…

The two Smiths face off in the catacombs of Budapest. It’s an epic showdown with enough thrills and spills to keep you on the edge of your seat.

The de-ageing is incredible…

The detail on the younger of Smith’s two characters is absolutely incredible. But it isn’t distracting. You’ll spend a minute gawping at the technology and then forget about it. It’s that good.

Clive Owen is really enjoying himself…

Owen plays Clay Varris, the man behind the GEMINI program which has created the clone. He’s a full-on malevolent mastermind and it’s a role Owen plays with real menace and real relish.

There’s room for more…

There’s definitely a door left open for a sequel here. Hopefully, if it does happen, it’s a little quicker than the 22 year-pace established thus far...

Gemini Man is out now in cinemas and will be released on DVD in 2020.

It is available to pre-order here in hmv’s online store.
