The movie, which is to be titled Bohemian Rhapsody, is currently filming in London and is due in cinemas in December next year.
Starring alongside Malek are X-Men: Apocalypse star Ben Hardy, The Social Network's Joe Mazzello and Jamestown's Gwilym Lee. Hardy will play drummer Roger Taylor, Mazello is bassist John Deacon and Lee portraying big-haired axeman Brian May.
The movie will be directed by Bryan Singer with A Cure For Wellness writer Justin Haythe supplying the script. The film will have full access to the Queen back catalogue, with a large-scale scene around the band's 1985 performance at Live Aid planned to be one of the movie's centrepieces.
Malek took the role of Mercury after the departure of Sacha Baron Cohen from the production after disagreements over the script. Baron Cohen had previously taken over from Ben Whishaw, who was the first actor to be attached to the movie.
