Ghostbusters: Afterlife sequel and Venom 3 both confirmed to be in the works
Sony’s Monday evening presentation at CinemaCon has yielded more news about their upcoming plans with the announcement that a sequel to Ghostbusters: Afterlife and a follow-up to Venom: Let There Be Carnage have both been given the green light.
Few details have been offered as yet on either film beyond confirmation that they are in the works, with the news revealed as part of a showreel presented by studio head Tom Rothman.
A third venom film was already being talked about as a likely scenario by Sony producer Amy Pascal back in December last year, with Tom Hardy expected to return. There’s been no news on who will direct the third movie in the series, although there has been speculation that Stephen Graham could return to role of Patrick Mulligan – which, in turn, could mean that we see Mulligan becoming the villain Toxin, although there has been no official word on either of these potential developments.
On the Ghostbusters front there’s not much in the way of detail either, but director Jason Reitman has previously told hmv that he saw Afterlife as “a foundation for more Ghostbusters” and it seems likely that Reitman would be the man to direct – especially given his long family history with the franchise after the original Ghostbusters films were directed by his father, the late Ivan Reitman, who sadly passed away in February this year.
Beyond that, for now we’ll just have to wait and see…
