Grease prequel Summer Nights announced

A prequel to Grease is on the way.

The new film will be set before the events in the all-conquering musical and will be scripted by Aladdin/Big Fish writer John August. It is to be titled Summer Loving.

Released in 1978, Grease told the story of high-school pair Sandy and Danny who fall in love over the summer, only to discover they're now in the same high school where they struggle to rekindle their romance.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the new movie will tell the story of how the pair come to first meet, a story which has very different versions in the movie's song 'Summer Nights'.

Grease began its life as a musical in Chicago in 1971 before being taken to the big screen with John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John in starring roles.

It subsequently grossed more than $395 million on a budget of just $6 million and has been re-released numerous times over the years.
